    • Bio: Anna Liknes Golie, 88, of Great Falls, died of natural causes November 14 surrounded by family.A celebration of Anna's life will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon following the service at the Sons of Norway Hall, 1314 7th St S. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home.Anna Cecilie was born September 5, 1926 in Akrehamn, Karmoy, Norway to Sigvart Tonnessen and Margit Johanne Sjoen. She grew up in Akrehamn where she attended school and graduated from business school. She worked in a general merchandise store. After enduring the German occupation of Norway during World War II, she met and married her first love, George J. Liknes, on June 19, 1948. George had been in the U.S. since 1922, so on July 30, 1948 the couple started their journey across the Atlantic Ocean via passenger ship to make a home in Great Falls, with Anna speaking no English. Anna had made him promise that they could return to Norway if she wanted, which they did with their two oldest children, John and Mildred, in 1953. However, the modern conveniences of life in America in the 1950s were missed and the family returned to Great Falls after a year. Although Anna learned English, she never lost her liltingly beautiful Norwegian accent. George was killed in an industrial accident right across the street from their home at the Great Falls Iron Works just before Christmas in 1959. Anna raised her children as a single parent and used her skills as a seamstress to sew draperies for local businesses at home. As her children got older, she worked outside the home at JC Penny, Buttreys Suburban, and managed several fabric stores. She married Clarence Kvande in 1966; they later divorced. This marriage produced a great joy in her life, her baby girl Sissel. She married Richard Golie in 1976 at Great Falls.Anna took great pride in her gardening, picking raspberries with grandchildren, growing roses and a plethora of complementing flowers as well as adhering to the Norwegian cultural traditions of entertaining guests. We imagine she is still busy taking charge entertaining anyone available in heaven with good coffee, krumkake and other heavenly Norwegian delicacies. She truly created works of art using her skills of sewing, crocheting, Norwegian embroidery, knitting, and quilting. Family, friends, and people in third world countries have been blessed recipients of her quilts which are symphonies of color, love, and design. Education was also very important to Anna and even though she was a single mother for many years, she sacrificed to allow her children to obtain a college education. She was also as proud of her Norwegian heritage as she was of her naturalized U.S. citizenship.Anna, a woman of faith, was a member of the congregation at Our Savior's Lutheran Church since arriving in Great Falls in 1948, Martha Circle, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Lovejoy Ministries, and a lifetime member of the Sons of Norway Lodsen Lodge 4-138. Anna was a woman of grace, love, courage and intelligence. Her life and spirit will be forever treasured by people who knew her. Her tenacious nature also reflected a stubborn streak that typified the saying "You can always tell a Norwegian, but you can't tell them much!" She also conveyed that gift to several of her descendants. She is survived by daughters Sissel (Kurt) Goldberg of Billings, Mildred (Al) Kuchera of Farmington, New Mexico; son George (Shelley) Liknes of Lincoln; daughter-in-law Sissel Liknes of Chandler, Arizona; stepdaughter Phyllis Mantz of Great Falls; devoted friend Jim Langley of Great Falls; brother Sverre Jostein Sjoen of Akra, Norway; eleven cherished grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Anna was preceded in death by her husbands, George J. Liknes and Richard Golie; her parents; her sister Margot; brothers Osvald and Arne; son John Liknes and stepdaughter Joy Langley.Memorials are suggested to Our Saviors Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice .Condolences for the family may be posted online at www.schniderfuneralhome.com
