Sedan jag sist skrev dig har vi varit ganska upptagna; mitt företag var på väg mot Rhinen och så på grund av det snabba framsteget och det heroiska arbetet hos några av de bästa soldaterna i världen, ligger nu min peloton på ett hotell vid bankerna nära Rhen. Låter bra, eller hur? Men om du kunde se soldaterna slåss, sova i leriga rävhål med tyska artillerier falla runt omkring, bara för att stå upp på de små timmarna på morgonen för att slåss som djävlar (eller hjältar) igen, skulle du veta att fånga ett hotell och dess bekvämligheter är lite tillräckligt tack vare dem. Min hjälpman under den sista körningen, behandlade sju sårade soldater i ett minfält, med full hänsyn till hans egen säkerhet. Han visste att han också befann sig i ett hett "gruvfält, eftersom det var så som de sju soldaterna skadades av" Bouncing Bitties "och" Shoe Mines ". Aho dog torsdag på Rapid City Rehabilitation Hospital. Han föddes 12 jan 1905, vid Lead till Matt och Hilda Aho. Som barn flyttade han med sina föräldrar till landsbygden Arpan området. Han utexaminerades från Nisland High School och tog examen från Spearfish Normal School (Black Hill State College).
Han gifte sig med Lelah Osness April 12, 1933 på Nisland. De bodde på Lead där Aho var anställd av Homestake Mining Co.
Om 1942 Aho återvände till undervisning och var en medlem av tränarstaben vid Yankon High School. Han fick sin Master of Education examen från University of South Dakota. Han tjänade då som föreståndare för skolor på Springfield och Onida innan du flyttar till Rapid City 1949
Aho var föreståndare för skolor i flera areaskolor, inklusive ny Underwood, Piemonte, Witten och Midland. År 1969 avgick han.
Efter pensioneringen 1969 han reste mycket i USA och Kanada och gjorde två resor till Europa.
Överlevande inkluderar hans fru, Lelah om Rapid City; en son, Dr James B. Aho i Carlsbad, N. M. " en dotter, fru Bruce (Diana) Chillion av Valdosta, Ga .; fem barnbarn och ett barnbarnsbarn.
Han föregicks i döden av två systrar, en bror, en dotter och en dotterdotter.

Allen Edward Stadler, 74, of Aurora passed away on June 25, 2006 at his home. He was born on July 28, 1931, the son of William and Louise Stadler.
Allen was a Korean War veteran. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan. Allen loved to fish but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanore; his children, Lori Stadler, Richard (Constance) Stadler, Lisa (Steven) Carlin and Dawn (Jimmy) Sherrod; grandchildren, Patricia, Katrina, Nicole, Eric, Ryan, Allison and Devin; great grandchild, Jakob; two sisters, Violet Alquist and Mae Wallingford; friend and fishing buddy, Bill Davidson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters.
The family will be receiving guests from 4 until 8 PM on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway, Montgomery. A Funeral service for Allen will be held at 11 AM on Friday June 30, 2006 at the Memorial Home. Interment at Lincoln Memorial Park.

An avid reader and wonderful storyteller, she also found joy in growing roses and tomatoes, collecting historical clothing, and following local sports. Throughout her life, she read the entire newspaper daily and always kept her hair appointment. She loved to put out a beautiful Christmas table with homemade caramels and delicate tarts.

At 31, she began patiently dating Garner B. Meads, M.D., whom she married on August 20, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. They wanted a large family and welcomed five children in five years.

At the U, she discovered her talent for acting, studied with her beloved Miss Babcock, and performed in many plays in the Playbox Theatre and Kingsbury Hall. She graduated in Speech and Theatre as well as Education. She taught Kindergarten for 13 years in Salt Lake City schools and also instructed teachers at the University of Utah. She spent memorable summers in New York City performing on the radio while completing post-graduate work at New York University. She served on the General Board of the Primary, starting "The Children's Friend of the Air" radio program during her tenure. She also worked as the fashion coordinator for ZCMI.

Bertha Thompson died early Sunday morning and was buried on Tuesday. She had been a sufferer for a long time and death was a blessed relief. Bio: ***OBITUARY*** Lorene Bastian Jan. 24, 1914 - Dec. 28, 1999 Lorene Marie Bastian, 85, Minot, formerly of the Van Hook area, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999 in her daughter's home. She was born Jan. 24, 1914 in Veblen, S.D., to Tobias "Tom" and Charlotte Wadholm. The family moved to the Van Hook area in 1917 where she was raised and educated. She married Herman Berends in 1932. She moved to Minot in 1945 and to St. Paul, Minn., in 1954. She was employed as head of the housekeeping department for a Holiday Inn in St. Paul for several years. Herman died in 1957. She married Clarence Bastian in 1978 in St. Paul, where they resided for a number of years. Clarence died in 1993. She returned to Minot in 1997 to live with her daughter, Marlene. She had played the violin and banjo for dances in the Van Hook area when she was young. Survivors: daughters, Marlene Erdman, Minot, Ella Mae Felt, Montrose, Minn.; son, Harold Berends, Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sisters, Hjordis Haar, Bloomfield, Colo., Myrtle Waller, Long Beach, Calif., Edith Wilber, New Town, Mavis Slind, Jamestown. Their father had a one-room shack about one and a half miles east and north of the present New Town, North Dakota. He later built one more room to serve as the kitchen. Lorena Wadholm married Herman Berands in 1932. Herman Berands was born January 28, 1904 and was from Portal, North Dakota. Three children were born to Lorena and Herman Berands. They were: Marlene, Harold, and Ella Mae. Marlene Marie (Mrs. William Erdman) was born February 9, 1934. She married William Erdman in March, 1951 and they have four children: William Paul, Williard Alfred, Mark Kim, and Theresa Marie Erdman Bruesch.Harold Fred Berands was born April 25, 1937 at Sanish, North Dakota. He is married and had three children Douglas, Allen (deceased) and Pam. Ella Mae Berands was born August 15, 1939 at Sanish, North Dakota. She married Gilbert Felt and they had five children: Tim, Terry and Penny (twins), Mindy, and Colleen. Ella married Phil Vossen in 1973. Lorena Wadholm Berands was also married to Sheldon Williams and Shirley Sanders. She is presently married to Clarence Bastian. Lorena's sisters are Marie Dahl, Louise McKay, Hjordis Harr, Myrtle Waller, Gertie Hornaday, Edith Wilber, Mavis Slind. She has one brother Theodore Wadholm. John Nali passed away peacefully on Dec 1, 2015, at the age of 95. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII and the U.S. Army during the Korean Way; several tours of duty in Europe and the Philippines before retiring May 1, 1965 at Fr. Lewis, Washington. For the past five years, John, a disabled Veteran, resided at the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting, WA.
John was born 11/15/1920 to Ludvig & Telia (Deckard) Nali in Canton, S.D., the third of eight siblings. He married Ruby Mae Jerde Dec. 13, 1941 in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Washington State in 1948 where they raised two sons and a daughter. Preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruby in 2006, and eldest son, Ralph in 2003.

Bio: Iola Register, 6 June 1945, Wed, Page 1Mrs Lena Brown died this morning at St. John's hospital following a brief illness. She was 73 years old. Mrs Brown was born in Stavanger, Norway. When she was 18 years old she came to the United States with her parents. The family first settled in Minnesota, later moving to Iowa. In 1898 they came to Allen county. Mr and Mrs Brown lived on a farm about two and half miles north of Iola until 1905 when they moved into town. Mr. Brown died about two years later.In 1918 Mrs Brown was elected as Register of Deeds for the county and served three terms in that capacity. She was a member of the First Methodist church and the Eastern Star and was active in both organizations. She made her home at 218 So. Cottonwood.She is survived by two daughters, Mrs Floyd Smith, Iola and Mrs Anita Benson, Los Angeles, Calif.; a son M. L. She was born on April 12, 1915, at Sisseton, S.D., to Norwegian immigrants Tobias (Tom) Wadholm and Charlotte (Lottie) Hartland. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, but never had the opportunity to visit the "homeland." She was a very strong woman who worked hard all of her life.She spent her childhood on a homestead farm at Van Hook, N.D., in a one-room tarpaper shack with her five sisters and one brother. Siblings, Louise, Lorene, Gertie and Theodore, along with half-sisters Marie and Hjordis, all preceded her in death. Two sisters, Edith Wilber of New Town, N.D., and Mavis Slind of Jamestown, N.D., are surviving.In 1936, Myrtle married Elmer Waller and they had three children born in North Dakota. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, she traveled by rail to Southern California, settling in the Paramount area. Elmer had traveled to California looking for work the year before.During WWII she worked at Firestone Tire Company making fuel tanks for military aircraft. After that and until retirement, she worked at several garment manufacturing companies. She was always the lead sample maker, making sample garments for the salesmen to show to prospective department stores and higher-end dress shops. She was always the lead top-stitcher.Elmer passed away in 1984, leaving her a widow. She lived in their home by herself for the next 23 years, doing all of her own housework and gardening. She never drove, but instead liked to walk, nearly a mile every day.Myrtle came to Kingman in 2007 to live with her daughter after having a mini stroke. She is survived by that daughter, Delores Schattler of Kingman and a son, Leroy Waller of Anaheim, Calif. Another son, Myron Waller of La Mirada, Calif., died in 2007. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael and Steven Tucker of Kingman, Daniel Tucker of Lakewood, Calif., Linda Klaas of San Jose, Calif., Leanna Waller of Long Beach, Calif., and Eric Waller of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren.Sutton Memorial Funeral Home in Kingman is handling arrangements. Services and burial will be at Forest Lawn, Cypress, Calif.

Phil was a long time employee of 3M Company (33 years), and member of Normandale Lutheran Church, Edina. Phil served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean War.

The name Ponsness is a variation of the name of the family farm in Norway, Pundsnaes. [In Norway, Ray's father was known as Lars Larsen.] Ray's mother, Bertha, was born in Illinois.In 1900, Reinhardt is listed with his parents and siblings in Highland Township, Palo Alto County, Iowa.Rheinhart E. Ponsness, Son, born August 1894, age 5, Single, born in Iowa, father born in Norway, mother born in Illinois.In 1910, the census has Reinhardt with is parents and siblings in Badger Township, Webster County, Iowa, listed as Raymond Ponsness.Ray served in WW1, and is listed in information on the internet from Webster County, Iowa, in "The Boys of Badger, Ponsness, Reinhardt E." He was listed as "Pvt., 1st Cl., with Co K, 64th Inf., 7th Div., A.E.F., Army of Occupation."The Marriage Record shows that Ray E. Ponsness and Mary Catherine Ballard were married at FT. He lived in Sioux City Iowa, prior to coming to Astoria in 1938. He had worked under Civil Service at Tongue Point as a painter and landscaper, and then worked at Astoria Plywood Mill until his retirement in 1962, as a watchman. Ponsness was married May 27, 1922, at Fort Dodge, Iowa to the former Mary Ballard, who survives him and lives at the family home. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Aniversary this year. He was a veteran of World War I and II, serving in the U. S. Army. He was a former post comander, VFW of Sioux City, Iowa, and attended the First Assembly of God Church of Astoria. Besides his wife, Mary, Ponsness is survived by a son, Bud Ponsness of Tillamook, two daughters, Mrs. Don (Betty) Long of Paulsbo, Wash., and Mrs. Garmond (Madonna) Mindt, of Portland, a nephew, Glenn Larson, of Astoria; four sisters, Mabel Gates, of Van Nuys, Calif., Rachel Treichel, of Waterloo, Iowa, Myrtle Jacobsen, of Walker, Minn. and Alice Kleckarr, of Madisonville, Ky; three brothers, Jonas Ponsness of Kansas City, Kan., Lewis Ponsness of Walker, Minn., and Lloyd Ponsness, of Rathdrum, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, and announced by the Luce-Layton Funeral Home, Astoria.
