- Bio: Peder Olson Skaar Obituary--1833-1918
Peder Olson Skaar was born 4 Feb 1833 at Skaar farm in Aardal, Stavanger Amt, Norway, where he was baptized and confirmed. He emigrated as a young man in the spring of 1857 and came first to LaSalle County, Illinois, where he lived for 12 years, after which he moved to Benton County, Iowa in 1869, where he lived the entire time since. He was married to Martha Johannesdatter Norstokke in the year 1873. The couple had eight children, of whom seven of them as well as the widow survive him. The children's names are Ole Olson, John Martin, Peder, Benjamin, Mrs John Anderson and Arthur Olson, together with 29 grandchildren and a brother Peder Olson, Sioux Rapids.
The deceased was well known in a wide area, and was loved and known for his candor, virtue, kindness and hospitality. He was a capable, industrious and energetic farmer -- and with foresight enough so that not only he, but all his children have fine farms and cozy homes, the result of a very pious, caring and dear father's work. He and his wife moved down to Norway and bought a large house with five acres of land which now is Norway's most beautiful residence. But what especially characterized him and made him a pillar in the Benton Congregation, to which he belonged from the beginning, was his honest disposition and furthering the kingdom of God. He was generous in both domestic and health missions--which were close to his heart.
