- Lars Johan Larsen Skjæveland (Johan Larsen) was born at the cottage of Håbakken in Høyland, the seventh child of Lars Olsen Dalen-Skjæveland and Marta Rasmusdatter Sjærnerø.
Johan Larsen "started in business at the age of 15 and for about 20 years (around 1889 -1909) ran his own business in Time, Jæderen."
Sometime before 1889, Johan Larsen worked in a store at a church-farm (now "Skeiane Tunet Eldresenter" = Elder Center) in Sandnes, Jæren, and there met Ane Elisabeth Svendsdatter Vatne (who worked as a maid; source: Fred), daughter of Svend Andreasen Vatne and Judita Torgersdatter Møklebostad. Johan Larsen and Ane Elisabeth Svendsdatter married in 1889 at Høyland Kirke.
Sometime prior to their marriage, Johan Larsen opened his own store in Thime Station (now Bryne), Jæren, where he also had a bakery (source: Fred). "Johan Larsen was a member of the district management/county council for several years and had other positions of trust in the township. He was among the founders of the Jæderen Private Bank."
When the 'cooperatives' started opening in Thime Station, Johan Larsen decided to move to a farm in Skjold ryfylke, (sometime after March 1909 but before 1910) where so Johannes was born, and his daughter, Magda Skjæveland, met and married Torger Sigvedsen Erland of Skjoldaustraumen, sometime before 1912. The family moved back to Thime Station for a short time where Johan Larsen managed a cooperative ("which he hated;" source: Fred) and then moved to Egersund sometime before 1914.
"Since the spring of 1914, Johan Larsen has run his own store in his own building at Nytorvet (street) in Egersund, and for the few years in which he has conducted his business, it has prospered in a very unusual fashion and has the largest turnover of its kind in the town. In addition to groceries, clothing and baked goods from it's own bakery, the store includes cattle foods, manuring, etc; and the sale of farmer's products like eggs, wool, etcetera."
