  • Noteringar
    • Jeremiah was born on September 18, 1848 in Rome, Georgia. Rome is the county seat of Floyd County which is located in the upper northwest corner of Georgia. Jeremiah was the eldest son of Jeremiah E. Langford and Mary Jane Jackson.
    • In 1851 the family moved to Milan, in eastern Texas where they joined the LDS Church. Milan is located on the border of Texas and Louisiana. In fact this was a location of a group of early converts to the Church. A third son, Francis (Frank) Marion was born on May 10, 1852 in Milan, Texas. Finally another son, James Albert was born in August 12, 1854.
    • The Pioneer Trek
    • In 1855, the family would travel north to Leavensworth, Kansas to start for Utah with the Seth M. Blair Company. This northward journey probably would have taken them through eastern Texas, western Arkansas including Ft. Smith, Joplin, Missouri and Kansas City. Early in the journey just outside Leavensworth both of his parents and older sister, Elizabeth (age six), took sick with cholera and died on June 19, 1855 on Grasshopper Creek with several other members of the company.
    • Jeremiah was only seven years old at the time. Upon him rested the responsibility of helping his three younger brothers the rest of the way to Salt Lake Valley, where they arrived on September 11, 1855. This was one year prior to the arrival of the first handcart companies. The boys were separated and placed with different families. Jeremiah and his brother William, went to live with Lorenzo Pettit, where Jeremiah remained until four years after his marriage. The Pettits had a farm on the Jordan River northwest of Salt Lake. Frank and James went to live with the family by the name of Moody. James was only nine years old when he died in Utah.
    • Life in Utah
    • As a boy Jeremiah worked on the Union Pacific grade. On May 10, 1869 the Transcontinental Railroad was completed at Promentary Point northwest of Ogden. Jeremiah would have been nineteen years old at this time.
    • Early Jeremiah was engaged in farming, freighting, mining and stock raising. He spent four years in Montana, freighting, and four years in Nevada and California, engaged in mining. While in Montana he freighted material for the building of Fort Custer, Fort Keogh, and Fort Assiniboine. On March 18, 1880 Jeremiah and Sarah Ellen Olson were married in Salt Lake City. He and Sarah moved to Salt Lake City where they remained the rest of their lives.
    • Industrialist
    • Jeremiah was a promoter of the Inland Crystal Salt Works in 1885. His first large success was attained when he succeeded in evolving a secret process whereby the salt from the Great Salt Lake could be purified. He succeeded after salt workers from England and experts from the Smithsionian Institution had failed. He was the first man in Utah to put in a dryer and sieve to granulate and manufacture a salt that could preserve butter and meat. He was the manager of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad and Saltair Beach for eleven years. Later his built the Majestic dancing parlor (150 feet wide and 264 feet long) which was the largest dancing pavilion in the world at the time.
    • Jeremiah was also involved in the building of the Bonneville baseball park. During the years of 1900 and 1901 he made two trips to Alaska. On January 30, 1905 the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad was completed. In 1906, along with Nephi Clayton and Charles Nibley, Jeremiah purchased the Saltair beach resort from the LDS Church.
    • In 1908 Jeremiah and Sarah built a large home at 687 Second Avenue. The home had a front porch topped by an iron balustrade, a southeast brick rounded bay on a corner lot of Second Avenue and "J" street. The family lived across the street to the east while the home was undercontruction.
    • On June 16, 1916 the Utah Securities Commission issued License #21 to the "Metal Safety Railway Tie Company." Jeremiah had perfected and patented a metal railroad tie, and devoted his energies to the development of the patent. He was president and general manager of the "Metal Safety Tie Company". Secretary of the company was his son-in-law Keith Jensen. In order to finance the venture, Jeremiah sold the big home on Second Avenue in 1918. The family moved to 818 E. 21st South in Sugarhouse. The Second Avenue home was purchased by Joseph Nelson, Jeremiah's replacement as the manager of the Saltair Beach Company. It wasn't long after that Jeremiah fell ill and died on November 12, 1919
