    • Bio: Durwood Dean Orstad was born September 6, 1955, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Russell Dean and Maxine June (Vetter) Orstad and passed away Monday, January 20, 2014, at his home in Griswold, Iowa.Dean grew up in Grant, Iowa, and graduated from the Griswold High School. He received an Associate’s Degree in Animal Science from Iowa Western Community College. Dean began farming after college and raised livestock his entire life. He was currently employed by Chad Comes.Dean was married to Tammy Anderson on September 11, 1982. He moved to Griswold in 2003.Dean always had a smile on his face and greeted you with a hug, living by the quote, “everything happens for a reason.” Dean loved his children and grandchildren and was always there for friends and family, no matter what. Every summer, Dean would hold an annual horseshoe tournament, the 6th annual scheduled for June of 2014. He was also busy planning the next annual Vetter family reunion. Dean enjoyed playing pool and was a faithful Steelers fan. He also enjoyed coaching his boys in wrestling when they were young and continued coaching and helping the local youth kids wrestling program up to the present time. He was an avid deer hunter, having just finished his 40th season. Dean was a former member of the Lewis United Methodist Church and was a member of the Cass County Fair Board for more than 20 years. During that time, he also served as member of the Sheep Committee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Maxine Orstad, his nephew, Trevor Frederickson and his niece, Melissa Anderson.Dean is survived by his children, Nick Orstad of Griswold, Tony (Jeri) Orstad of Griswold, Lucas (Courtney Sholly) Orstad of Urbandale and Mariah Orstad of Griswold; his grandchildren, Easton Orstad, Logan Orstad and Emily Orstad of Griswold; his sisters, Janet (Tom) Cappel and Diane (Duane) Petty all of Atlantic; his nieces and nephews, Kelly Cappel, Tom (Wendy) Cappel II, Tim Cappel, Trent (Crystal) Cappel, Troy (Megan) Cappel, Todd Cappel, Dent (Cindy) Petty, Darrin (Melanie) Petty, Dustin (Kylie) Petty; his great nieces and nephews, Colton and Aaron Suhr, ReAnn and Trey Cappel, Austin and Tyler Petty, Laena Frederickson, Grant Petty, Taryn Petty, Bryn Petty and Tenley Cappel; his ex-wife, Tammy Orstad; his parents-in-law, Duane and Betty Jane Anderson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Scott (Jan) Anderson of Lewis and Kim (Greg) Palmer of Griswold; his nieces and nephews, Mike Anderson, Josh, Jeremy and Melanie Palmer; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Print Obituary
