- Bio: Arliss Jeanette (Shaffer) Monk, 91, of Greeley died February 27, at Bonell's Good Samaritan Center nursing facility. She was born May 2, 1921 in Ault to Joel Charles and Beatha Melvina (Nali) Shaffer. She grew up in the Ault community, though the family homesteaded in Huerfano County in her early childhood and lived for a year in California, returning to Colorado in 1926.
- She graduated from Ault High School in 1938 and received her bachelor and lifetime teaching certificate from Colorado State College of Education, now the University of Northern Colorado. She taught high school students in Gilcrest and Westminster in Colorado and in the states of Washington and Virginia.
- On 15 June 1947 she married William Woodward Monk at the First Lutheran Church in Ault. (He died November 11, 1994). They moved to Staunton, Virginia, where her husband was a music instructor. While there she was active in her church and the local music club, AAUW and a volunteer for the city library.
- In 1954 the family moved to Greeley where Arliss was a partner with her husband in a piano tuning business in a wide area in northern Colorado for over thirty years. During that time she also qualified as a certified genealogist and pursued that profession, publishing numerous articles and several family histories.
- She was co-founder of the Weld County Genealogical Society, a member of the Union Colony Pioneer Society and served on the board of the former Creative Arts Center and the committee for identifying Weld County historical sites. As a charter member of the Weld County Historical Society, the local chapters of Territorial Daughters of Colorado and Colorado Association of Professional Genealogists and Family of Christ Presbyterian Church she has held several offices. She was a volunteer with RSVP and Centennial Park Library. Her other interests were in opera and movies.
- Survivors are a daughter, Gail (David) Newton of Greeley; grandchildren, David E. Gonzalez of Sacramento, Cal., Camille (Craig) Steiner of South Elgin, Ill., Justin Hoffner of Greeley, and Will Holsclaw of Longmont and a step-grandchild, Heather Holsclaw of Lansing, Mich.; a special friend, Cornelia Dietz; and eleven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Elea, Kayla and Brenden Gonzalez; Jonathan, Micah and Hannah Steiner; Kyra, Kirby and Kenyon Hoffner and Jonathan Demarest.
- She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Birdie (Russell) Holsclaw; a son, Ken Monk, an infant great-grandchild, Keeley Hoffner; her daughter-in-law, Evalyn Hoover; and her sister, Barbara Jensen.
- The body has been donated to the Colorado Anatomical Society for medical research with inurnment in Linn Grove Cemetery. Services will be at the First Congregational Church in Greeley on Saturday, March 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. At her request, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Family of Christ Presbyterian Church (2410 35th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634 or to personal charities of choice.
