    • Bio: Elgard Louis "Dick" Lafferty, 69, 1026 6th Ave. SW, Minot, ND, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, in his residence of natural causes.
    • Elgard Louis Lafferty was born on April 2, 1935, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Bourassa) Lafferty in Leyden, North Dakota. He was raised in Walhalla, ND, and attended schools at Fort Totten and at St. Michael's in the Devils Lake area. As a youngster, he would return to Walhala during the summers to work with his grandparents on the potato farm. In 1948, he moved to Sherwood and worked for Sam Daily, herding wild horses in Canada.
    • Dick entered the US Navy in 1953. He served six years during the Vietnam and one during the Korean War. He was stationed on the USS Yorkton, USS Princeton, USS Tyconderoga and the USS Oriskany. He was honorably discharged on September 24, 1973 as an E-6.
    • After his discharge, he worked in an oilfield in Green River, Wyoming. He then built a home at Mouse River Park and worked at Farmers Union in Sherwood. He also worked as a roustabout for Stanley Welding in Sherwood and Miller Oil in Kenmare.
    • Dick was married to Connie Boger on June 1, 1982, in Minot. Most recently, he worked at Ward Williston of Westhope. They had made their home in Minot since1997.
    • He was a former member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Mohall. He was currently a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion in Sherwood.
    • Dick enjoyed auto repair, golfing, playing cards, gambling, and traveling. Most of all, he enjoyed working, visiting with people and taking care of his pet dog, Cookie. The pride and joy of his life were his three grandsons, Bud, Logan, and Cody.
    • Surviving family includes: wife: Connie of Minot;sons: James (Jeri) Lafferty of San Diego, CA; Wayne (Brenda) Johnson of Arizona; James Engh; Earl (Mary Lynn) Engh; and Joe (Dana) Engh, all of Sherwood; daughters: Heather Golly of Minot; Heidi (Kirk) Sather of Okinawa, Japan; Diana (Sheldon) Schoenberg; Linda (Doug) Riddle; Debbie (Gilbert) Rodriquez, all of San Diego, CA; and Angel (Steve) Larson of Minot;29 grandchildren including: Elgard, Logan, and Cody sisters: Lorraine (Clarence) Hanson of Jamestown; and Sonja (Richard) King of Utah; brothers: Norvel Lafferty of Des Moines, IA; and Clayton Lafferty of Colorado;several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    • Dick was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beulah Peterson, Marlene Lafferty and Bervella Crooks.
    • Funeral: Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot, ND.
    • Interment: Union Cemetery, Sherwood, ND.
    • Visitation: Tuesday from Noon until 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
    • Vigil Prayer Service: Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
