- Bio: Malcolm Estrem was born in Minnesota, a son of Joseph Oleander Olssonn Estrem 1865–1937 and Dorothea Larsdtr Thorpe 1873–1911. He had siblings Edith Evangeline 1896–1984, William Thorpe Josephsonn 1897–1973 and Goodwin Ferdinand 1906–1910.
- His family lived in New London, Minnesota where his father was a bank cashier in 1900 and later worked for the church synod as a secretary and auditor.
- Malcolm lived with his father in 1930 when he worked as a gas station attendant.
- He married Maybelle Lillian Hagen 1908–1996 in 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had a son Phillip J.

- Malcolm invented and held many patents on a product vending machine, the "world's best hot chocolate machine", starting and becoming President of the Vendomatic company in 1960. This machine was in practically every Denny's and McDonald's in the world.

- In 1992 he and Maybelle made a $1.2 million gift of the Spirit in the Desert to the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. This became a retreat and renewal center in Carefree for thousands of Valley Lutherans. The renewal center is in a building that once was the Adobe Inn and also once housed the Diet Center of Carefree and was originally called the Estrem Center. Relatives of the Estrems were the first overnight guests in the 16-room accommodations area of the center. Malcolm, then 84, said he funded the renewal center in part because "the Lord has blessed me with the ability to do so, and it was time to give some back to him."
