- Bio: LuVerne Peterson, age 89, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, January 19, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 23, at Huron First Presbyterian Church preceded by burial at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bonilla Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday, January 22, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Monday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice; First Presbyterian Church of either Bonilla or Huron; or the American Cancer Society. LuVerne Peterson was born LuVerne Margaret Tollefson, daughter of Tollack and Stella (Oakland) Tollefson, on September 3, 1922, at Bonilla, SD. She graduated from Bonilla High School in 1940, then attended Northern State University at Aberdeen, SD, transferring to Huron College where she received her BA degree in education. On November 8, 1945, LuVerne married Elwood Peterson in Huron, SD. The couple lived in Bonilla until 1990 when they moved to Huron. LuVerne taught elementary school for 32 years (5 years in Beadle County rural schools; 27 years at Bonilla and Tulare schools). LuVerne was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Bonilla serving as elder, organist, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and was active in the United Presbyterian Women's Organization; in 1990 became a member First Presbyterian Church in Huron where she served as a deacon, plus holding various offices in the United Presbyterian Women's Organization; National Rural Letter Carrier's Association Auxiliary having held offices at both district and state levels; American Legion Raymond-Hart Post #84 Auxiliary of Hitchcock; and Huron Area Senior Center. Grateful for having shared in her life are her son, Darel (Barb) Peterson of Huron, SD; daughter, Darla (Doug) Roeber, of Maryville, TN; 6 grandchildren, Patrick (Ellen) Roeber, Karen (Steve) Dunn, Reis (Becca) Roeber, Cherine (Eric) Smith, Cris (Jamie) Peterson, and Chaun (Nickie) Peterson; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Jeaniene Woodford of Gettysburg, SD, and Arlette (Jack) Harris of Chicago, IL; 1 brother-in-law, William Scheibe of Huron; many nieces and nephews. LuVerne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elwood on October 14, 2011; a son, Dale Lynn Peterson in 1958; 3 sisters, Ruth Williams, Theone Marshall, and Doris Scheibe; 3 brothers-in-law, Merlyn Williams, Lyle Marshall, and Donald Woodford
