- Gayle Shulenberger Janowitz died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010. She was 88 years old. Gayle was born near Parker, South Dakota, and graduated from Parker High School in 1938.
- During high school, she benefited from a National Youth Administration scholarship and belonged to an award-winning debate team. She moved to Hyde Park during World War II and became a counselor at the Orthogenic School. Her work with disturbed children is cited in the classic "Truants From Life" by Bruno Bettelheim. Gayle remained in touch with her former charges for many years.
- She attended the University of South Dakota for a year and received her masters degree in education from the University of Chicago, after placing out of the remainder of her undergraduate work.
- She married Morris Janowitz in 1951, and the couple had two daughters, Rebecca and Naomi. Morris died in 1988.
- In 1965 the University of Chicago Press published her book "Helping Hands: Volunteer Work in Education," drawn from her experiences running after school study centers in Hyde Park and in the Ida B. Wells housing development.
- Gayle taught reading for many years at the William H. Ray School, retiring early to take care of her husband during his lengthy illness. She composed a vivid collection of stories about growing up in South Dakota during the Dust Bowl days.
- She was an ardent supporter of many environmental causes, anti-poverty groups and especially those organizations that helped children and the Democratic party. She felt the excitement of Roosevelt's first victory was finally eclipsed by Obama's win in 2008.
- In addition to her daughters, she is survived by her son-inlaw, Andrew Lazarus; and four grandsons, Noah and Gideon Lazarus and Aaron and Daniel Collard; her sister Doris Bergeleen and numerous nieces and nephews.
- In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Friends of Ray School. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at K.A.M. Isaiah Israel, 1100 E. Hyde Park Blvd.
