- Bio: Funeral service for Ingvald Askeland, 90, was held Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson. He died July 13, 2000, at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. Reverends Mark Decker and Glenn Smith officiated. Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.Ingvald Askeland, the son of Kristopher and Inger (Svinelid) Askeland, was born Dec. 3, 1909, near Haugesund, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran church near his home. Askeland came to this country in 1928. After spending some time in New York working in the subways, he came to Thompson in February of 1929 to work for his uncle, Iver Lee, and other area farmers.April 11, 1936, he married Lavina Torkelson. They farmed the farm of his cousin, Jake Lee, later moving to a farm northeast of Buffalo Center. In 1948 they bought the farm east of Buffalo Center where they lived until he moved to the Timely Mission Nursing Home in April 1993.Askeland enjoyed fishing, wood working and gardening, and doing some traveling during his retirement years. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his family and was always ready to help. He was a member of Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake and served on the church council for several years.Survivors include his wife, Lavina; five children, Lila Rauk and her husband Arlyn, of Leland, Koreen and his wife, Karen, of Buffalo Center, Orvin and his wife, Pam, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Carolyn Skogen and her husband, Don, of Rake, and Diane Christianson and her husband, Steve, of Fergus Falls, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and three brothers, Corrin and Christian of Florida and Knut, still living in Norway.He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ingeborg Farland and Caroline Askeland; five brothers, Einar, Tom, Jens, Jacob and Isak; a son-in-law, Carlin Egesdal; and a grandson, David Egesdal.
