    • Bio: Bement-Barbara J. (Whitmer) Nelson, 91, formally of Champaign passed away peacefully with her children at her side on December 7, 2017. She will be laid to rest with her late husband at Danville National Cemetery. Her memorial and burial will be held at a later date.
    • She was the daughter of Harold (Pete) and Gladys (Curry) Whitmer, born on August 29, 1926 on the family farm in Brocton, IL. She Married Eugene O. Nelson on November 22, 1953, he proceeded her in death on June 12, 1998.
    • She is survived by her brother Fred (Mary Jane) Whitmer, her nine children, Richard (Linda) Nelson, Douglas (Carol Graham) Nelson, Judie Nelson, Julie (Rick) Epps, Cindi (Randy) Holdren, Christie (Terry) Summers, Tim Nelson, Tom (Vicki) Nelson, and Michael (Jami) Nelson, 22 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and 13 step grandchildren. She also leaves behind a niece, three nephews and many cousins.
    • She was proceeded in death by her brother, Phillip, and step granddaughter, Ashley.
    • She graduated from Brocton High School and attended St. Mary College studying education. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Champaign.
    • Whether working at the hospital, bank or answering service Barbara was the ultimate hard worker and professional all while raising nine children. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed being surrounded by her large family. She enjoyed traveling, playing the piano and was a master at Jeopardy and Bingo. If you visited their home, you would find dad and mom playing a game of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy on the television and always drinking coffee.
    • We would like to thank the staff at Bement Health Care Center for their love, compassion, and care of our mother while she was a resident there. We would also like to thank Harbor Light Hospice with a special thanks to Neal and Jordan.
    • In lieu of flowers we ask that you send donations to St. Jude Children Hospital and/or Bement Health Care Center in c/o Activity Department.
