    • Bio: Norbert A. Weinkauf, 88, New Effington, SD, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in the Rosholt Care Center, Rosholt, SD.

      Burial was in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington, SD. Military honors were provided by the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Honorary pallbearers were his past horse and trail ride friends and companions. Active pallbearers were Steve Schrader, Jared Bartnick, Terry Gollnick, Guy Mackner, Burnell Weinkauf, and Ed Gawlick.

      Norbert Adolph Weinkauf was born June 5, 1917, in Minnesota Township, near Hammer, SD, to Friedrich and Caroline (Klein) Weinkauf. He was baptized July 8, 1917, in Hankinson, ND, and confirmed September 4, 1932, at St. Paul's Evangelical Church near Hammer. He attended rural school near Hammer through the eighth grade. After finishing school, he worked at home on the farm. He was employed in LeSueur, MN, for a time and then returned home to work for Charlie Krause.

      On April 6, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army Cavalry. He served in the Philippine Islands Campaign (Leyte), the New Guinea Campaign, and the Central Pacific Campaign (Admiralty Islands). He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, Bronze Arrowhead, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, and three Bronze Battle Stars. He was wounded at Leyte and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged June 16, 1945. Norbert then returned to New Effington and was employed at area businesses.

      On August 11, 1950, Norbert married Ethel Wilhelmina Gollnick at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hankinson, ND. He began farming in the New Effington area and also helped area farmers. He retired in 1988, and Norbert and Ethel moved to New Effington, SD, in 1996. In 2004, they moved to the Rosholt Care Center in Rosholt, SD.

      Norbert was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington, and the Sisseton VFW Post 3342. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, baseball, and horses.

      Survivors include his wife, Ethel; two daughters, Patsy (Bennie) Schmechel of Breckenridge, MN, and Jody (Jeff) Bartnick of New Effington, SD; five grandchildren, Steve Schrader, Lucinda Aamot, Jennifer Schmechel, Jill Bartnick, and Jared Bartnick; two step-grandchildren, Bruce Schmechel and Lorraine Rice; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorinda (Clifford) Sanden of Bozeman, MT; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Weinkauf of Sisseton, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

      Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oswald and Gust Weinkauf; sisters, Hilda Kutter and Estelle Frances; and three infant sisters.
