Richard F. "Dick" Walburn, 87, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.
- Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with Pastor Charles Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be 5 to 8 p.m. today with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. - Richard was born in Sioux City on Jan 21, 1919, to Silvester and Elnora (Lower) Walburn. He attended Riverview, West Junior and Central High School, graduating in 1939. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in the European Theater aboard the USS Menges DE 320 as a motor machinist mate.
- On Sept. 2, 1950, he married Jean P. Kutil. The couple made their home in Sioux City. He was employed at West Side Dairy, A.L. Galinsky Fruit Company and Great Northern Railroad (later Burlington Northern) as a fireman. He was promoted to engineer in 1950. He retired in 1980 after 38 years with the railroad.
- He was a member of Riverside Lutheran Church and was a 50-year member of Landmark Masonic Lodge. He was secretary/treasurer for the Iowa State Legislative Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, retiring in 1980. He and Jean volunteered for many years at the Community Theater doing maintenance work and anything else needed. Richard loved working in the yard, feeding the birds and the animals, including the horses, and tinkering around the house. He loved spending time with his railroad buddies and having coffee at Harvey's and the Horizon. He was especially close to his great-great-nephew and niece, Connor and Whitney. His eyes would light up when they entered the room. He will be forever missed.
- Survivors include his wife, Jean; sisters-in-law, Shirlee (Gale) Holmes of Des Moines, and Frances (Larry) Johnson of North Sioux City; caregivers niece and nephew, Penny and Bill Crosmer of Sioux City; and many other nieces and nephews.
- He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Paul; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Doris and Bob Bourret.
- Pallbearers will be Bud Albrecht, Ron Roupe and nephews, Cory Schlotfeldt, Kim Rosenboom, Marty Holmes and Scott Clifford. Honorary pallbearers will be Gale Holmes and Larry Johnson.
- In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Hospice of Siouxland.
