    • Bio: Jean Katherine Amanda Slemp Dyrland passed away on Friday, February 24, 2006 at a local nursing home. Jean was born on April 22, 1921 in Yankton, SD, the daughter of Lena (Jensen) and Roy Bently Slemp. She attended schools in Yankton, and graduated from Yankton High School in 1939. Upon graduation, Jean attended NCB, a business college, in Sioux City, IA. After working in Sioux Falls, SD, she worked at North Western Public Service in Yankton, as the "Home Service Girl". Her job was to demonstrate and teach how to use purchased appliances at the customer's home. It was there she met and married Roald "Doc" Dyrland. They were married September 28, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. Jean was a faithful member, and active in many couples' Bible studies as well as the Naomi Ladies' Circle, and Library committee. Her grandparents were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Her mother, Lena, was very proud that Jean was the first baby girl born in the newly built Sacred Heart Hospital. Jean worked as the clerk at the Yankton Dept. of Motor Vehicles for many years. She was active in many local clubs, which at the time were known as sewing, questers, extension, and bridge clubs. Jean, along with her husband, volunteered for delivery of Meals On Wheels, in Yankton, SD. "Doc" and Jean loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing, camping, and especially golf. They both enjoyed being in several "foursomes", and many lifelong friendships were created. They were married 55 years. After Roald retired in 1983, they enjoyed traveling. They had the opportunity to travel to England three times to visit their daughter, Jaclyn, and son-in-law, CMSGT (ret) Rich Lake, while they were stationed there in the Air Force. They also had the opportunity to take cruises to the Inside Passage in Alaska, and through the Panama Canal to Acapulco. After Roald passed away in March of 2003, Jean came to live with Rich and Jackie Lake, her daughter and son-in-law. She lived with them for two years, and then needed to be moved to Beverly Health Care, Bella Vista Nursing Home, for medical reasons. Jean's sunny disposition and gentle humor were a joy and blessing to all who were around her. She always left a good impression with all who met her.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Jaclyn and husband Richard of Rapid City, her brother Martin Slemp of Yankton, two nephews, John Slemp of Yankton, and Mark Slemp of Alton, IA, and their children.
Her husband and her parents preceded her in death. Visitation will be held at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 from 5:00-7:00pm, and for two hours prior to the funeral service in Yankton, SD. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm, on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, SD, with Rev. David Wildermuth presiding. Memorials have been established to the Rapid City Meals on Wheels Program, and the Bethel Assembly of God Sunday School Ministry. Jackie wishes to extend her thanks to the staffs of Beverly Black Hills, and Bella Vista nursing homes for their compassionate care.
