- Bio: Knute was born Knute Andreas Nilsen, the son of Nils and Marta (Ole Henriksdtr) Johannessen on the Langaker farm in Skudesnes, Norway. After emigrating to the United States in 1886 Knute, using the Americanized spelling of his farm, changed his surname to Longfield. His destination was Iowa.By 1891 Knute was employed with the Bergeson brothers in Estherville, Iowa. But he was raised on a farm and used this knowledge to make farming his livelihood for most his life.On December 31, 1893 Knute gave up his bachelor life and married Johanna Johnson, the daughter of Jacob and Sigrid Johnson. A year later they welcomed their first son, Nelles, followed by a daughter, Josephine, in 1896. In late 1897 Mable Olida was born. But by the turn of the century Knute's young wife Johanna had passed away of typhoid fever.After this loss, Knute gathered Nelles and Josie and returned to Langaker farm in Norway to raise them with help from his family. It is unknown at this time where Mable was. Knute remained a widower until April 15, 1903 when he married Elisabeth Johannesdtr, daughter of Johannes and Anna (Tomasdtr) Johannessen, and Knute's first cousin.They welcomed a son Kasper in late 1903, and a daughter Anna in 1908. During this time Knute was traveling back and forth from Norway to the States. By 1920 he decided to make Iowa his permanent residence. Elisabeth however wanted to stay in Norway and this decision ultimately lead to their divorce in June of 1924. Nelles, in 1910, and Josie, in 1914, also returned to Iowa, while Kasper and Anna stayed in Norway with their mother.Knute lived out his days in Roland and Cedar Rapids, IA until his death in November of 1961. He never remarried, but did live with companion Rachel (Ellingson) Anenson until she remarried John Hagen in 1945. Besides Johanna and Mabel he was preceded in death by his second wife, Elisabeth in 1942, and daughter, Anna in 1941. They were lost during the time the Germans invaded Norway during WWII. Survivors at the time of Knute's passing included his sons; Kasper who passed away in 1979, Nelles passed in 1974 and daughter Josie passed in 1977. He also left behind ten grandchildren.
