- Bio: Fern Mortvedt, 87, of Everett, WA, died January 21, 2007. She was born on January 24, 1919, in Nashua, Montana, to a farming family with seven kids.
- She attended Wayland Academy for high school with her aunt in Beverdam, WI. She went on to business school in Fargo, ND. Careers were limited even for smart women in those days and she soon became the secretary for an Air Force general in San Antonio, TX.
- She met Lt. Hector Mortvedt in Long Beach, CA, where they married. She enjoyed being a Navy wife and had many stories of her time stationed in Alaska, Hawaii, and Monterey.
- She gave birth to Alexander and Derek while stationed in London. After they left the Navy, she and Hector dedicated their life to church work. Hector was ordained at Fort Wayne Seminary.
- Fern and Hector both graduated from the Summer Institute of Linguistics. This prepared them to be the translation team to bring the Bible to the Dei tribe of Liberia in their own language.
- It takes uncommon dedication to raise a family half way around the world in the bush, with no running water or electricity. During their travels, Everett was always home base for the Mortvedts.
- She left behind two sons, Alex and Derek; and three grandchildren, Teija, Soren, and Tryg.
- Her service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, January 26, at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran in Everett.
- She will be buried next to Hector at the Machias Cemetery.
