    • Bio: Mary was born in Tennessee, probably in either Hawkins County or Knox County, 14 May 1904. Her birth parents were John and Jimie (Wright) Johnson. [See: 1900 census, Civil District No. 1, Hawkins County, Tennessee, E.D. 76, sheet 8A, lines 1-4. This lists John and Jimie Johnson, with son Carl, age 2, and mother-in-law, Nannie Wright, a widow, age 48.Mary's mom, Jimie Johnson, died shortly after Mary was born, and Mary went to live with her mom's sister, Nannie Ballard and her husband Melvin Martin Ballard. The Ballard's adopted Mary and you will find her listed as Mary K. Ballard, age 5, daughter, born in Tennessee, on the 1910 Census, Tennessee, Knox County. One of Mary's daughters said the famly called her mom Mary K. Some of Mary's records show her middle name as Catherine, but it may originally have been spelled Katherine. In 1920, Mary Ballard is living in Fort Dodge City, Webster County, Iowa.A marriage record for Webster County, Iowa, shows the marriage of Mary Catherine Ballard, age 19, who lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Ray E. Ponsness, age 26, who lived in Badger, Iowa. It lists her mother as Nana Wright and her father as M. Ballard. The couple was married in Fort Dodge, Iowa, 27 May 1922, in the First M.E. Church. Three children were born to this marriage, two daughters and a son: Betty, Madonna and Chauncey "Bud." All three were born in Iowa.In 1930, Mary and Ray lived in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, and had a daughter named Betty. They are living near Mary's parents. In the late 1930's, about 1838, the family moved to Oregon, and lived in and near Astoria, in Clatsop County. Ray died in 1972 in Astoria. In June 1980, Mary married Fred H. Steppa, in Tillamook. Mary Catherine Ponsness Steppa, 89, of Salem died here Tuesday. She was born in Tennessee and lived in Fort Dodge and Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Astoria in 1938. She moved to Tillamook in 1973 and then to Salem. On May 27, 1922, she married Reinhardt Ponsness; he is deceased. She then married Fred Steppa on June 21, 1980; he died in 1988 in Salem. She worked for Bell Telephone, the Navy at Tongue Point and the Elliott Hotel in Astoria. She also was a homemaker. She belonged to the Assembly of God Church in Astoria, where she taught Sunday school and led women's mission groups. She enjoyed her home and family and entertaining friends. She was an original member of the Tillamook Senior Citizens Drop-In Center. Survivors include her daughters, Denice Long of Salem and Madonna Mindt of Lake Oswego; son, C.E. "Bud" Ponsness of Salem; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday in Waud's mortuary, Tillamook. Contribution may be made to International Ministries, P.O. Ponsness, Steppa the daughter of Melvin M. Ballard and Nana Wright Ballard, was born in San Clair, Tennessee, May 14, 1904. She died in Salem on March 15 at the age of 89 years. Mary grew up and attended school in Tennessee later living in Fort Dodge and Sioux City, Iowa. She married Reinhardt Ponsnes on May 27, 1922. In 1938 she and her family moved to Astoria where Mary was active in the Assembly of God Church where she taught Christian Education Classes and she served as director of the Women's Missionary Council. While living in Astoria Mary also worked at the Astoria Navy Base, Elliott Hotel and the Bell Telephone Co. Her husband Reinhardt passed away in August 1972. In 1973 she moved to Tillamook, OR and became very involved in helping to form the Tillamook Senior Drop in Center. She married Fred Steppa on June 21, 1980. Mary was an active member of the Tillamook Christian Center and besides workng on the Drop In Center she was very active in the Meals on Wheels. After her marriage to Mr. Steppa they both continued to develop and take charge of the Senior Drop In Center. She was also a member of the Tillamook Pioneer Association. Mr. Steppa died in 1988 and Mary moved to Keizer to be near her family. She is survived by her son: Chauncey E. "Bud" Ponsness, Salem; two daughters: Betty Long, Salem; Madonna Mindt, Lake Oswego; eight grandchldren; 12 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild. Funeral services were held March 18 at 2 p.m. in Waud's Funeral Home, Tillamook. Those who wish may contribute to the International Ministries, P.O.
