- DUANE L. SANDAHL, 77, born May 15, 1931, died April 24, 2009, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.
- He was preceded in death by:
his beautiful fraulein, Luise, in 2004;
- his mother, Mabel Sandahl;
and his father, Arthur Johnson.
- Duane was born in Fergus Falls, MN, and lived most of his life in Clitherall, MN, and had lived in Urbandale, Iowa, for the last 31 years.
- He was a loyal military man and a great patriot, retiring from the US Army after 20 years of service. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant.
- After retiring from the Army, he worked at Taylor Pets, owned Pioneer Beach Resort in Spirit Lake, IA, and then retired in 1983, he then drove a school bus for the Urbandale school district. He enjoyed driving the UHS boy's baseball team and special needs children.
- Duane loved nature and the outdoors. He liked to go hunting, but "shot" only with his camera.
- DUANE will be missed by his children:
Steve, of Windsor Heights, IA; Deborah (Michael) Wabiszewski, of Elm Grove, WI, and Robert, of Urbandale, IA;
- grandchildren:
Christina, Lauren, Michael and Madeline;
- sister-in- laws:
Elisabeth Taylor, of KY, and Erica (Jack) Capps, of Urbandale, IA;
- nieces: Heidi, Erika, and Lisa, and their families;
- and special friend, Joy Hartz, Des Moines, Iowa.
- A special thank you to Mercy Hospice "angels" especially to Jerri, to Dr. Schreck, Dr. Ghali and Dr. Harvey, and a thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Marcie at Mercy Hospital. Memorial donations will be used for artwork to be placed at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, in Duane's honor or to the American Diabetes Association.
- Funeral Services will be 12 p.m., on Monday, April 27, 2009, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
- Private burial with Military Rites will follow the service at GLENDALE CEMETERY, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.
