  • Noteringar
    • The following article was written in 1926 by Mr. Ahre of Astoria, South Dakota, at the request of Pastor A. Buckneberg who wrote a book about people who had come to America from the small island of Bokn, off the west coast of Norway. The Rev. B. had been chosen to prepare this book at a Stavanger "Lag" in Canton, South Dakota, in 1919. In 1926 Jorgen, also known as George, then a retired farmer living in Astoria, sent the following account to the author of "Boknefolket."
    • "My family left Bokn, Norway for America in 1872, in the sail-ship "Carl Johan." The captain was Johan Nyman from Stavanger. We were on the Atlantic for six weeks. We had nice weather for the most part, though the wind was against us nearly all the way. We landed in Quebec - my parents, 8 sisters, and I.
    • My father's name was Thomas Ahre. He had been born on Sorbo, in Renneso. Mother had also been born on Renneso - thus we had no relatives on Bokn. My mother's name had been Dorothea Marie Olsen - she had come from Hegland.
    • From Quebec we went to Newburg, Fillmore County, in south-eastern Minnesota. We lived there until 1878. Then I went to Deuel County, Dakota Territory, where I took one-half section of land as a homestead. I got a man to break up a few acres for me, then went back to Fillmore County.
    • In 1879 I drove west with horses and wagon. I broke up more land, then in the fall, returned to Minnesota. The trip to Dakota and back added up to 600 miles.
    • In March of 1880 I hired a freight car on the Milwaukee Road at Lanesboro, Minnesota. In order to get it for as little as possible, I promised to use only the Milwaukee Railroad for the trip west. The price then was $25.00. The closest I could get to my homestead by rail was Flandreau, South Dakota which was 40 miles mostly south from my land. But now I must tell a little about how our family had lived in Minnesota.
    • At Newburg, Minnesota
    • We farmed 80 acres there, for a few years. My first team was a pair of oxen, too slow for me. After a year's time, I made a trade and got a team of horses. We had a home in Minnesota for a few years. My oldest sisters worked for others a good deal. My youngest sister was 8 when we came from Norway.
    • The reason we made Minnesota our destination was that my parents each had a brother living there. My father had a brother in Illinois too, but he had died long before we came from Norway. My mother had both a brother and a sister living in Illinois. In time, some of these relatives came to Minnesota to visit us. They wanted my sisters to go back to Illinois with them. Two went, and they liked it so well that soon more sisters went. All married there and the families did well. At this writing, two have died - Hannah, the youngest and Caroline. The four in Illinois, still living are Dagline, Tomine, Anna, and Clara...
    • A Wedding in 1881
    • Our young pastor, Ivar Hinderaker, had come from the island of Karmoy, or Visnes, across the sound from Haugesund, Norway, not far from the Visnes copper mine. He also had come to America in 1872 - leaving Stavanger a week before we sailed, and arriving in Illinois before we got to Minnesota. He was 21.
    • After a few years of work on Illinois farms, he entered an early Augustana Luthern Seminary in Beloit, Wisconsin (sic). He was ordained in 1879 and was called to Minnesota and Dakota. In 1881 he was married to my next oldest sister, Martha Marie. His former teacher, Prof. David Lysnes, came from Wisconsin to officiate. The wedding was in our sod-house, on July 4th, and the whole Bethlehem congregation was invited.
    • The Hinderakers made their home in Canby. the pastor then served three congregations, Bethlehem, Canby and Sinai. Sinai was 50 miles south-west of Canby so he had long drives with his horse and cart. Soon more congregations were organized.
    • After 16 years Hinderaker was called to Newburg, Minnesota so he, Marie, and the five children moved there. After seven years there, the pastor suffered increasingly from headaches and other health problems. He retired in 1901 and the family came to the farm he had bought in South Dakota. the family liked farming and the father's health improved. He served three congregations farther west for ten years.
    • In time the two younger sons took over the farm work and the parents moved into the house they had built in town in 1914. Hinderaker was now 75 years old. The oldest son, Hoseas, was managing the Farmer's Elevator so lived with his parents in town. the next oldest son has been superintendent of Hendricks Schools for many years. The Rev. Hinderaker and Marie had 4 sons and one daughter, Mabel Dorothea. But Mabel died in 1910.
    • Now in 1926 my oldest sister, Kjerstine, and husband, Nils Lovaas, have also retired from farming and built a house in town...
    • Note by translator: Mr. Ahre must be mistaken about the location of the early Seminary Pastor H. attended. In his "Note Books" Hinderaker wrote that the Seminary was in Marshall, Wisconsin.

    • Astoria, S.D., June 8.—Two church congregations here were honoring Rev. I.H. Hinderaker today. He will be 90 years old Sunday.
    • Rev. Hinderaker was born in Norway in 1851. In 1872 the family moved to Marshall, Wis. Here he attended school and later took his theological training. In 1878 he was ordained into the ministry at Rushford, Minn. Later he served the following congregations: Bethlehem of Astoria, S.D.; St. Paul of Canby and Florida, both in Minnesota; Sinai, Holden, Arlington, Nordland, Whitewood, Bangor, and Bruce, S.D. In 1918 he retired from the ministry
On July 4, 1881, he was married to Martha Marie Ahre who died April 18, 1932 at the age of 84.
    • Funeral services were held Saturday for Rev. I.H. Hinderaker who died Thursday at the age of 92.

    • Rev. Hinderaker was born at Haugesund, Norway, June 9, 1851. In 1872 he came to America where he attended school at Marshall, Wisconsin, and in 1879 he was ordained into the Lutheran ministery at Rushford, Minnesota, He served congregations at Astoria, Sinai and Holden in South Dakota and at Florida and Canby, Minnesota at various times.

    • In 1881 he was married to Martha Marie Ahre. She died April 18, 1932. He is survived by 4 sons, Theodore of Hendricks, Minnesota, Irvin of Minneapolis, Anton and Hoseas, both of Astoria. One daughter, Mabel, died in 1910.

    • Reverend Hinderaker also served the Bangor church near Arlington before it was located as the Trinity church in Arlington.
