  • Noteringar
    • Bio: FORT BENTON - Former nurse and nursing instructor Bertha Jean (Hanford) Dyrland, 90, a devoted homemaker, died of natural causes Sunday at a Great Falls extended-care facility.
    • Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Benton, followed by her funeral at 3:30 p.m. at Fort Benton Methodist Church and a meal after the service. Benton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
    • Jesus came for Bertha Jean Hanford Dyrland shortly before noon on Nov. 28, 2010.
    • Bertha Jean, as she came to be called in the last years of her life, was born in 1920 to Louise Gwinn Hanford and James Arthur Hanford at their home in Shonkin, Mont., with their neighbor Mrs. Knudson in attendance.
    • From Shonkin, the family moved to Spokane, Wash., for a year, but came back to Shonkin and Fort Benton, where Bertha Jean graduated from high school in 1936. She attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., and then entered nurses' training at the University of Washington in Seattle. There she spent her internship at Harborview Hospital, and graduated with the class of 1943.
    • She returned to Montana, where she spent some time as a nurse at Warm Springs. She was well-suited to her profession, and served as a head nurse and as a teacher of nursing.
    • On June 2, 1947, she married Clifford Magnus Dyrland of Big Sandy, and devoted herself from that time to her husband and family. Throughout her adult life, she was plagued with mental illness, which was a torment to her and to those around her, but her loving spirit grew in spite of, and possibly because of, her disability, and she was esteemed nonetheless by her family and friends.
    • In 2005, Bertha suffered a stroke, through which she lost the use of her right side, and most trying of all, her power of speech. Living at Benefis Skilled Nursing Center for the better part of the last six years, she had perfected the art of greeting newcomers with an energetic salute of the arm and hand that remained to her.
    • Her courageous spirit and the love that she shared in spite of her situation brought encouragement to those around her, fellow sufferers, workers and visitors alike.
    • A little less than a year ago, Bertha Jean renewed her commitment to Christ Jesus, accepting His love, forgiveness of sin, and promise of eternal life, in exchange for her recognition and sorrow for her own sin, and her need of a savior and of her trust in Jesus to do what He has promised. When He came for her on Nov. 28, she was ready to go with Him.
    • She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her brother, Howard Hanford; her sisters, Marian (Hanford) Long and Florence (Hanford) Robinson of Highwood and Fort Benton; her son, Howard Magnus (Kay) Dyrland of Big Sandy; and her daughter Gwinn Dyrland (Alan) Clapp of Glendive, Mont.
    • Surviving are a son, David Arthur Dyrland and daughter Janis Ann Dyrland-Marquis of Highwood, Mont.; grandchildren, Laura Dyrland; Benjamin and Elizabeth Clapp; Jessica and Rosanna Dyrland-Mecklenburg; Matthew, William, Anthony and Christopher Dyrland-Marquis; step-granddaughter, Nicole Marquis Mastrolia; and one great-grandchild, Isabella "Izzy" Dyrland-Mecklenburg.
Bertha Jean was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed.
