- Pioneer woman, Mrs. Hannah Elizabeth Niles, 85, for many years a resident of the North Saco area, died at a Glasgow Hospital Nov. 5, 1961. Funeral services held at the Saco Methodist Church with Rev. Ellen Rose officiating and burial at Grandview Cemetery.
- Pallbearers were J.C. Clemmer, Joe Mavencamp, Lee Nelson, Jerry Hammond, Irvin Niles and Charles Carlson.
- Mrs. Niles was born at Dove Holls, Derbyshire, England August 29, 1876. She was married to Simon Gartside May 10, 1897 and in 1907 came to Quebec, Canada. They later moved west to Vanguard, Saskatchewan where they engaged in farming. In 1913 they came to Montana by team and wagon and homesteaded 25 miles north of Saco.
- Mrs. Gartside shared the hard work of opening up a new country. She drove a five horse team breaking sod and made the two day trips to bring wheat to market with a team and wagon. To the Gartsides were born ten children: Mary, Sarah, Gertrude, Simon (Tom), Harriet, Elizabeth, Stanley, Harold, James and Martha. Mr. Gartside died May 1933.
- In 1939 Hannah Gartside married Earl Niles. He died in 1953 and her son Harold died in 1955.
- The deceased is survived by nine children. Mrs. James Plester (Mary) of Swift Current, Sask, Mrs. Earl Carpenter (Sarah) of Waukon, Minnesota, Mrs. Clarence Hinks (Gertrude) of Swift Current, Simon (Tom) Gartside of Moses Lake, Washington, Mrs. John Mavencamp (Harriet) of Hagerman, Idaho, Mrs. Endre Fjeldheim (Elizabeth) of Choteau, Montana, Stanley Gartside of Saco, Montana, James Gartside of Glasgow, Montana and Mrs. Walter Valentine (Martha) of Glasgow, Montana. One sister and three brothers still live in the home town in England. There are 36 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. *
