"DEATH CALLS WAR VETERAN
C. LOGAN, VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR, PASSED AWAY LAST MONDAY
- C. Logan, pioneer citizen and veteran of the Civil War, passed away at his home Monday morning after suffering for several months with cancer. Mr. Logan had enjoyed the best of health until the past year, when he began to fail and for the past four months had been confined to his bed.
- Christian Logan (Tjernagel) was born at Tjernagel, Haugestund, Norway, April 19, 1841, and died October 11, 1926, being 85 years, 5 months, and 22 days old at the time of his death.
- In 1857, at the age of sixteen years, he emigrated to this country, making his home in Norway, Illinois, with his brother Peder Tjernagel. When war was declared he volunteered on August 17, 1851, and was mustered into Company F, 86th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers at Newark, Ill. His company served most of the time in Missouri, but during the first winter, he was taken sick and was honorably discharged at Rolla, Mo., on February 13, 1862.
- Mr. Logan made a trip to his old homeland in 1864 and after returning to the United States, he was married to Miss Bertha Lier, to which union five children were born. They are Henry G. Logan, Pipestone, Minns.; Mrs. H.M. Sparboe, Minneapolis; Knut C. Logan, Ada, Minn.' Mrs. Jonas Christian, Roland, Iowa; Mrs. P.S. Larson, Minneapolis. His wife died in January 1883. In the fall of 1883, he was married to Miss Gurine Ostrem, one child being born to them, but died in early childhood. Mrs. Logan passed away in 1885. In 1888, he was married to Mrs. Julia Boyd, to which union five children were born. They are, Mrs. E.B. Christian, Roland; Mrs. C.S. Tesdahl, Radcliffe; Mrs. K.Mehus, Roland; Palmer Logan, Roland, and Noel Logan, Dubuque. He also gave a home to his third wife's children, Mr. O.S. Boyd, Roland; Mrs. Rev. J.M. Mason, Montevideo, Minn., and Mrs. O.P. Teig, Roland. Two nieces, Mrs. M.C. Duea, Alexandria, Minn., and Mrs. Howard Jondall, Roland, were also raised at the Logan home, from the time they became orphans until their maturity. Mrs. Logan passed away three years ago.
- Upon arrival at Roland in 1864, he purchased a farm four miles northwest of townn, which continued to be his home until twelve years ago, when he retired and moved to Roland, to enjoy the fruits of the years of strenuous work in helping develop the prairies of the virgin soil of Iowa, to its present highly improved condition.
- Mr. Logan was affiliated with Salem Lutheran congregation being a charter member of same, and was always very active in church work and supported the church liberally in a financial way. He was a member of the G.A.R., his last appearance at a public gathering being at the Decoration Day exercises last spring, when he and A. Sampson, the two surviving veterans, were brough to the schoolhouse. SInce that time he has been confined to his home, the last several weeks he was taken care of by Mrs. O.P. Teig.
- Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 at the residence and at 2 o'clock at Salem church. The American Legion will take part and he will be buried with full military honors."
