- Bio: Hazel Maxine Rostad, 89, Minot, formerly of Carpio, died suddenly yet peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Minot.Hazel was born to Samuel and Hannah (Cross) Blackwood on the family homestead in Ivanhoe Township near Donnybrook, North Dakota on June 27, 1926. She attended rural grade schools and Donnybrook and Carpio High Schools.Hazel married Emery Rostad on July 27, 1943 in Seattle, Washington, where both of their parents were living at the time. After their marriage they returned to the Carpio area where they lived for 56 years. Hazel was the mother of seven children, and was a stay-at-home mom until the youngest was in school. She retired from Trinity Homes in 1982 and moved to Minot after Emery’s death on March 8, 1999. In 2014 she became a resident of Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Minot.Hazel was a life-long member of the Carpio Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed. After moving to Minot she attended Christ Lutheran Church.Hazel enjoyed playing board games, and especially enjoyed the weekly Scrabble games with her friends in Minot. She cherished time with her family and often expressed that her biggest source of pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Emery and their son Dennis, her parents, brother Lt. Arthur Blackwood and sisters Ardell Broderson, Florence Carlson and her twin sister, Helen Powers, and brothers and sisters-in-law Earl Carlson, Roy Powers, Mike Kurimski, Harvey Broderson, Angeline and Freeman Peterson, Alfred and Mildred Rostad, Jearold Rostad and Leonard Anderson and several nieces and nephews.Hazel is survived by her daughters Karen (Bill) Ferris of Falling Waters, WV, and Michelle (Gary) Rademacher of Berthold and sons Jim (Verla) of Minot, Arlen (Luci) of Bismarck, Curt (Joyce) of Minot and Jon (Denise Sundean) of Stanley. Surviving grandchildren include Lorne (Kimberly) Balbirer, Michelle Melendez, Jackie (Steve) Lawson, Andy (Alecia) Rostad, Charlie Rostad, Tessa Rostad, Patrick (Sabrina) Robbins, Justin Rostad, Michael Rostad, Mylah Rostad, Missy Rostad, Steven Sundean, Jessica (David) Blake and Jarrod (Jessi) Rademacher and 11 great-grandchildren with one more expected in September. Also surviving are sisters Myrtle Kurimski and Elizabeth “Bette” (Stephen) Ashton, sisters-in-law Evelyn Anderson, Dorothy Rostad and Eldeen Rostad and several nieces and nephews.Thompson-Larson Funeral Home
