- Bio: US NAVYshared marker with Gwendolyn (1925-2015)∼John Ludvig BjorkstamJohn Ludvig Bjorkstam of Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2016.John was born to Adolf and Elin Bjorkstam in Seattle on February 2, 1927. He graduated from Ballard High School and served in the Navy as Electronic Technician's Mate Third Class, 1945-46. John graduated from the University of Washington in Electrical Engineering. (1952), Ph.D. (1958) University of Washington, was appointed Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering in 1955, then advanced to Professor in 1965.Professor Bjorkstam has specialized in solid state electronics and studies of molecular motion and ferroelectrics. He has done consulting work for Boeing on solid state maser research. In 1967-68 he spent a year's leave of absence in France and Yugoslavia working on ferroelectricity."After retiring from the U.W., Dr. Bjorkstam taught at Reed College. He consulted for several agencies and institutes through the years on various projects to include preliminary research on MRI. His scientific career interest spanned a technological timeline from vacuum tubes to quantum mechanics. He served on various boards, including Trinity Western University Board of Governors and United Evangelical Free Church.His most important priorities were his trust in his Savior Jesus Christ, and his enduring love for his wife of 66 years, Gwen. He was loved and admired by many for his optimistic outlook, his wisdom, his humor and his kindness. John was a patriarch of the Bjorkstam and Oakland families. John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Les and Marge Bjorkstam, nieces and nephews Don and Jeanne Oakland; Eric Bjorkstam; Trygve Bjorkstam; Rich and Svea Truax; Leah Oakland, Jim and Connie Thompson, Sarah Bokor; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at United Evangelical Free Church at 1420 NW 80th Street, Seattle, 98117.Published in The Seattle Times from Sept. 6 to Sept. 7, 2016
