- Bio: Funeral services were held Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church for Lawrence Bird, age 91, who died on April 13th in a Westhope nursing Home. Rev. Charles Taft officiated, Mrs. Marge Martinsen was organist and Bud Carlson sang. Casketbearers were Donald Byrd, Dale Byrd, Vernon Byrd, Dean Byrd, Jerry Byrd, and Donald Conlin. Interment was in Trinity Cemetery with Thompson-Larson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He was born Aug. 21, 1895, in Belgrade, MN, to Peter and Marie Bird. In 1901 he came with his family to Fairbanks Township, Renville County, where he was reared. He served in the Army from Sept. 18, 1917, to March 18, 1919, and then returned to the area to continued farming. He married Lydia Hansen Sept. 5, 1926, in Kenmare. They lived and farmed north of Kenmare. She died April 19, 1960. He married Ella Askvig in Kenmare July 22, 1966. They lived in Kenmare, Mohall and Westhope. He had been a resident of the Westhope Home since 1982. His wife died Aug. 18, 1984. He was a member of Trinity Church and had been active on the school and township boards of Denmark Township, Ward County. Survivors include sons, Dean and Dale Byrd, both of Kenmare, Donald Byrd, Williston, Vernon Byrd, Nassau, MN; daughters, Marcella Nettles, Grass Valley, CA, Marlynn Conlin, Thompson Falls, MT; step-sons, Ole E. Askvig, Rapid City, SD, Gerald Askvig, Glasgow, MT, Lloyd Askvig, Minot, Richard and Alrie Askvig, Minneapolis, MN; step-daughters, Della Nelson, New York Mills, MN, Dorothy Byrd, Kenmare and Frances Lee, Minot; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Stalberg, White Bear Lake, MN.
