- Bio: Joseph "Joe" Peterson, 95, died Thursday, August 16, 2007 at Big Lake Nursing Home, Monticello, MN.
- Funeral service will be 10 AM, Monday, August 20, 2007 at Calvary Lutheran Church, St. Hilaire, MN, where he still belonged, with Reverend Terri Cuppett officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
- Visitation will be 5 – 8 PM, Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN with a 7 PM prayer service and for one hour prior to the service at the church, Monday.
- Joseph Eldred Benford Peterson was born in Fairmount, ND, August 27, 1911 to Gabriel and Josephine (Eide) Peterson. He was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church, St. Hilaire, MN on December 11, 1911 and confirmed there when a teenager. He grew up on a farm in River Falls Township, Pennington County MN. He attended rural school receiving a perfect attendance award. As a young man, he worked for area farmers and later went to Iowa to find work.
- He met his wife Darlene Lee and they were married, July 26, 1940 at Soldier, IA. They went to Pennington County (Hazel), MN, where they farmed with his brother, Melford on the home place for a few years. At the end of World War II, they moved back to Waterloo, IA, where he found employment at John Deere Tractor factory in Waterloo. They lived in Cedar Falls, IA and raised their family there. He belonged to the UAW Union. He worked there for over 25 years, retiring in June 1972. Joe and Darlene bought land for an acerage from his sister and husband, Gladys and Ray Johanneck. They built a retirement home along the Red Lake River and enjoyed gardening and fishing until Joe lost his vision. They moved to SummerField Place apartments in Thief River Falls until he entered Oakland Park Nursing Home in September of 2003. Later he moved to Monticello/Big Lake Nursing Home, where he passed away. He planned his vacations to return to Northern Minnesota for visiting and fishing.
- He is survived by his wife, Darlene, Monticello, MN; children, Roger (Sandra), Pecatonica, IL, Bryce (Sharon) Plymouth, MN, Diane (Floyd) Gerholdt, De Soto, IA and Sidney (Wendy), Maple Plain, MN; 8 grandchildren; almost 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Dale Peterson, Brooklyn Park, MN; sisters-in-law, Colleen (Geof) Lake, Soldier, IA and Doris Peterson, Thief River Falls, MN; brother-in-law Bryce Lee, Soldier, IA and also a number of nieces and nephews.
- Preceded in death by parents; brother, Melford; sister, Gladys (Ray) Johanneck; sister-in-law, Bernice Peterson; brothers-in-law, George Lee Jr and Gale Lee; sister-in-law, Donna Bierman.
