- John Pederson passed away just one day after learning that he had inoperable cancer.
John was born in 1915 and grew up in Willmar, Minn., with his five brothers and five sisters. Joining the Minnesota National Guard as a private in November 1940 and called to active duty in February 1941, John ultimately rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the close of World War II in 1945.
John then married Ida Sophie Talsness Pederson in January 1946 and spent two more decades in the U.S. Army Adjutant General Corps, retiring as a full colonel. John was most proud of earning his wartime promotions by helping to plan and implement support for the invasions of Sicily, southern France and follow-on operations in France and Germany.
After the war John served on the East Coast, where he earned his jump wings with the 82nd Airborne at the urging of then-Col. William Westmoreland. John served in the Pentagon at various times, and also had tours of duty in Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, Korea, Hawaii, Minnesota and Okinawa, with a final posting at the Presidio San Francisco.
Retiring in 1968 to Novato, John worked for Bank of American and Goodman¹s Lumber in Novato, where he and Ida were active members of Novato¹s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. John and Ida moved to Fairfield in 1997 to live in the retired officer¹s community of Paradise Valley Estates and attended services on-site with their fellow residents.
John¹s joy in life was his family, and he is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ida; three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include three sisters; two brothers; four children; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many grieving nephews and nieces who will miss their "Uncle Johnny" and his zest for life.
Aged 88 years.
