- Memorial service bulletin notes:
Dr. Peggy Ann Ramstad, 81, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth, where she had been receiving palliative care since 2005. Peggy was born in Bricelyn, Minnesota on December 23, 1926 to Myrl Peter Ramstad and Ruth Luna Smith Ramstad. She graduated from Osseo High School in 1944 and the Minneapolis College of Music (piano) in 1948. Later she earned a master's degree in music education from that same institution. In 1950 she became the supervisor for elementary music in Red Wing, Minnesota, where she became life-long friends with the Koehler family. Earning her Ph.D. in education from Michigan State University in 1967, Peggy taught at Toledo University for four years and the remainder of her career at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana where she was associate professor and specialized in reading education.
Retiring in 1989, Peggy returned to Minnesota where she thoroughly enjoyed her downtown life as a resident of 110 W. Grant in Minneapolis and was a patron of the arts including the Guthrie Theater, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and most especially the Minnesota Orchestra. Peggy was also a frequent visitor to the public library and YWCA. A member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, she served there in many roles including a term as lay leader. She was an organizer and charter member of the Medica Skyway Senior Center, serving as a regular volunteer and board member. She attended many continuing education courses at the Center for Senior Citizens' Education of St. Thomas University and through elderhostels. She traveled widely both before and after retirement, most recently including Norway, two trips to the Holy Land, Greece, and Ireland.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, the Rev. M. Peter Ramstad. She is survived by sister-in-law Beverly Ramstad, nephews Peter (Jan) Ramstad, James (Marlene) Ramstad, and John (Dawn) Ramstad; by niece Ruth Ann Ramstad (David Coward) and by ten great-nieces and nephews. Peggy will be especially remembered by her nephews and niece for providing their first opportunities to fly on an airplane as children and for encouragement of their higher educations through financial gifts each birthday and Christmas. Peggy continued this tradition with her great nieces and nephews, who will also remember the Holidazzle parade, swimming at 110 W. Grant and meals from the Dayton's Deli.
Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at the United Methodist Church of Peace, 6345 Xerxes Avenue South in Richfield. A private family burial will be held at Niggler Cemetery in Osseo. Former pastor of Wesley UMC, dear friends Reverend Kaye Brandt and Rev. Laurits Nielsen will preside.
A family visitation will be held one hour before the service. [August 22, 2008]
