- Bio: Fern Knutson February 7, 1919 - July 1, 2007Fern was born February 7, 1919 on a farm west of Centerville to parents Peter and Emma (Skonhovd) Oakland. She entered into death July 1, 2007 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 88 years, four months and 24 days. Fern attended Pleasant View Country School and graduated from Centerville High School in 1937. She attended Southern Normal College and earned a one-year teaching degree. She returned to Pleasant View to teach and also taught at Euclid School for one year. She married Charles Knutson on August 10, 1940. Charles was manager and auctioneer at the family owned Centerville Sales Barn. They had three children, Jean, Dean and Jim. Fern helped Grandma Peterson serve many lunches at the sales barn lunch stand every Tuesday (sale day) and many special sales. She also worked at Frahm's Variety in Centerville for many years. After Charles' death in 1954, Fern returned to teaching at Pleasant View, Pleasant Grove and Ellis White Schools. She attended summer school at USD and Southern State Teachers College every summer and earned a degree in elementary education in 1964. Fern moved to Tulare in 1965. She taught fourth grade and title reading and math. During this time she also served as a caregiver for an elderly person in Tulare. She retired in 1982 and returned to her home in Centerville to enjoy her family and many activities. During her retirement years she enjoyed pheasant feather crafts. She took many trips touring the states. Fern was a member of the Centerville Garden Club and Centerville Senior Citizens. She was an active member of Scandia Lutheran Church, enjoying special activities of WELCA, Circle and Quilting. In 1990, Fern suffered from a serious stroke. Her family admired her will and determination to recover and lead a normal life. They appreciated her pleasant attitude and ability to enjoy life. Fern has been an inspiration to all who knew her. "Good" was a familiar word you would hear from Fern. She lived at the Garfield Apartments in Centerville until 2004 when she moved to assisted living at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center. She moved to Bethesda in October 2006. Her parents; husband, Charles; three brothers, Palmer, James and Vandal and four sisters, Violet Blake, Mildred Rist, Ida Peterson and Blanche Oakland preceded her in death. Grateful fro having shared her life are her daughter, Jean Lounsbery and husband Ron of Centerville; sons, Dean Knutson and wife Lucy of Beresford and Jim Knutson and wife Roxann of Boone, NC; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jeff, Amber and Haidyn Lounsbery of Centerville, Al, Shari, Zac and Alex Duminy of Omaha, NE, Chris, Monica, Tori and Payne Lounsbery of Las Vegas, NV, Mike, Shellie, Tim, Hailey, Sarah and Ryan Sveeggen of Beresford, David, Katie, Corey, Jordan and Kara Knutson of Tea, Brandon, Becky, Blake and Brady Peterson of Alcester, Stuart, Kristy, Carter and Kindra Sveeggen of Beresford and Stephanie and Stephen Knutson of Boone, NC; sisters-in-law, Eunice Oakland of Centerville, Ada Oakland of Sioux Falls and Merle Knutson of Hopkins, MN; brother-in-law Richard Knutson and wife Midge of Fairfax, VA and her special nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services for Fern Knutson will be Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Arrangements by Wass Funeral Home.
