- The funeral for Irene M. Rice, 79, of Devils Lake, formerly of Esmond, was held Tues. at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Esmond. Interment was in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Minnewaukan. She died April 7, 2000 at her home.
- Rev. Betty Stedman officiated. Pallbearers were Sylvester Hoffner, Ron Faleide, Wayne Jensen, Darwin Brokke, Lloyd Lorenz & Dalen Green. The gilbertson Funeral Home of Devils Lake was in charge of arrangements.
- Irene Merle Rice was born Feb. 1, 1921 to John & Luella Georgeson Anderson in Bremen. She attended schools in Maddock, Minnewaukan & Cando. she worked at the Hanson Cafe, Towner County Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service, Vine Lord Agency & first State Bank in Cando. On Oct. 10, 1943 she married Arthur Rice in Cando. The couple lived near Esmond where she worked at the Esmond Cafe. They later lived in Phoenix, Ariz., where she was employed at Chicken De Lite & Elhambra Dress Factory. In 1977 they moved to Devils Lake.
She enjoyed crocheting, needlework, baking, gardening & flowers. She was active in the Esmond Trinity Ladies Aid, Sunday school, the VFW Auxiliary, Isabel Farmers Union, Hesper Homemakers, Heim Lodge Sons of Norway & Rebekah Olive Branch of Devils Lake.
- Survivors include her husband; 2 sons & daughters-in-law, LeRoy & Diane Rice of Devils Lake & Arthur Lee & Cindy rice of Grand Forks; 4 grandchildren; & 2 great-grandchildren.
- She was preceded in death by her parents & a sister, Inez Anderson.
