- Bio: Harris J. Nygard, age 85, of Grafton, ND, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton, ND. Harris J. Nygard was born February 29, 1924 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of the late Henry and Jennie (Askvig) Nygard. He attended elementary school in Grand Forks. In 1937, the family moved to Grafton where his father started Nygard Auto Body. Harris completed his education in Grafton, graduating in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II where he served as a nose gunner in a B-24. He was discharged in 1945 and he returned to Grafton where he worked for his father. Harris was united in marriage to Eilene Mohagen on September 22, 1946 at Grafton Lutheran Church. In 1967, Harris and Paul Benjaminson purchased the business from his father and they ran the business until 1983. Harris was also one of the four founders of the New View Cable Company in Grafton. He also did crop adjusting for a few years. Harris was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church, Grafton American Legion Post #41, the Grafton V.F.W. Post #9367 and he served as a 4th ward councilman on the Grafton City Council for many years. Harris and Eilene enjoyed spending time with their family and friends at their Pelican Lake MN, cottage. Harris is survived by his daughters: Patti (Randy) Olson, Grafton, ND; Stacy (Brad) Standley, Newburyport, MA; nine grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Jacqueline (Donald) Napper, Fargo, ND, two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Neil, and wife, Eilene, on May 22, 2009. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41. The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the arrangements.
