- Bio: Francis Joe Murphy, age 87, of Rolla, ND passed away on August 16, 2020 at Somerset Assisted Living in Minot, ND.
- Francis Joe was born on March 16, 1933 to Harold and Clara (Christofferson) Murphy in Pennville, Indiana and attended school in Sarles, ND. Joe married Lois Evelyn Moe on November 10, 1951 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Rolla. Joe and Lois raised three children; Phyllis, Glenn, and David.
- Joe and Lois moved to Towner in 1953 and started a dry cleaning plant which he closed in 1956. They moved to Wallhalla in 1956 and then sold that dry cleaning plant after a year. In 1957 they move to Velva and was owner/operator of a hotel/apartment building. While they lived in Velva Joe also had a rug cleaning business in 1959 and a soft ice cream business in 1960. In 1961 they moved to Sarles for one year. They then moved to Rolla and was in farming/ranching, worked for Farmers Union, Ray Neameyer, and Poitra Construction.
- Joe has been in various businesses including earth moving, construction, and farming. In 1974 Joe started a septic tank business. Then in 1976 Joe started the refuse business and served as president of Murphy Service Inc./Midwest Sanitation Inc., a family owned corporation that provided refuse service to 55 area cities until it was sold in 1994.
- Joe was Outstanding Jaycee in 1959 while in Velva. He served as District Republican Party Chairman for several years. He coached 5th & 6th grade boys and girls basketball in 1975/76. Joe became a member of the North American Bison Cooperative from 1997-99. He served as board member of Parkview Assisted Living and a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
- Joe and Lois moved to a farm one mile north of Rolla in 1978. Joe retired in 1995. They moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Rolla in 2001, where Joe continued to live following Lois' passing in January 2009. In October 2017 Joe moved to Somerset Court, Minot where he passed away on August 16, 2020. He will be lovingly missed by all his family and friends.
- Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Clara, wife, Lois, and brothers, Howard and Ralph.
- Joe is survived by his daughters, Phyllis (Ted) Harrington; sons, Glenn (Mae) and David (Karen); grandchildren, Christopher (Nara) Murphy and Jason (Cassie) Murphy, Rebecca Murphy, Rachael Bergman, and Ryan (Cammie) Murphy; great grandchildren, Stella Murphy and Lincoln Murphy, Rylie Murphy, Murphy Bergman, and Macready Bergman; brothers, Gil Murphy and Harold (Barbara) Murphy; and several nieces and nephews.
