- Bio: Wilma G. Avenson, 95, of Oelwein, Iowa passed away with her loved ones at her side on Thursday morning, February 18, 2016 at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein.Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 22, 2016 at Peace Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Rev. Michael Holmen officiating. Visitation: 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa. A Memorial Fund has been established for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Online obituary at www.jamisonschmitzfuneralhome.comWilma Georgetta Morey was born on the Morey farm southeast of Motley, Minnesota on June 3, 1920 the daughter of Alvah & Mabel (Hopkins) Morey. Her father, Alvah, died on Christmas Eve when she was four years old. Her brother, Edward, became the patriarch of the household, almost like a father. Wilma remained very close to her brother until the time of his death. She graduated with a class of nine from Motley High School in 1938. With financial help from her Aunt Reva, she graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College where she played clarinet in the band in 1940. Following graduation, Wilma accepted a job teaching grades one to four in Dorset, Minnesota, where she taught for three years and was paid $80 a month. On February 19, 1943 Wilma was united in marriage to Donald C. Avenson of Dorset, at her mother's home in Motley, before he was drafted into the Army a month later. They later moved to Minneapolis and there they had their first three children, Donald D., Richard D. and Susan L. In 1955 Donald and Wilma bought Oelwein Tool & Die in Oelwein, Iowa where their fourth child James C. was born in 1959. Wilma was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Oelwein. She joined the philanthropic society, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, in Oelwein that raised money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital and other charitable organizations. In 1985 her husband, Donald C. died of cancer.Wilma devoted her life to homemaking, raising her children and above all enjoying the company of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Seldom seen without a smile on her face, she passed away on February 18, 2016 with her loved ones by her side.Wilma is survived by her 4 Children: Donald (Diane) Avenson of Oelwein, Richard Avenson of Oelwein, Daughter: Susan (Steven) Vanselow of Hackensack, Minnesota & James (Ronda) Avenson of Westgate; 11 Grandchildren & 10 Great Grandchildren.Wilma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband: Buster on July 20, 1985.
