    • Bio: Estherville, IA - Melvin Leroy Loewenberg, the son of Henry and Frances (Petersen) Loewenberg, was born June 18, 1932 in Halfa, Iowa. He died Monday, August 27, 2007, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 75. He attended high school in Sherburn, Minnesota. Melvin moved with his family to Estherville, Iowa in 1948. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Japan. On September 4, 1955, Melvin was united in marriage to Delores Sampson at First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. They made their home in Estherville and began raising their family. He worked with his father-in-law, Lloyd Sampson, at the Skyline Club in Estherville, the Marcon Ballroom in Iowa Falls, Iowa, a ballroom in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and the Central Emporium Ballroom in Okoboji, Iowa. Then he became involved in direct sales and was employed at Art's Way Manufacturing in Armstrong, Iowa. Mel was honored as one of Art's Way's top salesmen. In his years of sales jobs, they lived in Mitchell and Garretson, South Dakota, Armstrong, Estherville and finally Spirit Lake, Iowa. Mel had three passions in his life, his sons, the Masons/Shriners and buying and selling anything that he could get his hands on. Delores died October 25, 2006. Delores and Mel were married 51 years and had never spent an anniversary apart. On September 4th, they will spend their first anniversary together in heaven. In his younger years, Mel boxed in Golden Gloves. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as hobbies. Most especially, Mel enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Mel was very active in the Masonic Lodge and was an avid Shriner.Melvin is survived by his loving family: Mike Loewenberg and his wife, Terri. of Springfield, Missouri, Mark Loewenberg and his wife, Chris, of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Bruce Loewenberg and Lisa of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Sylvia Sampson of Estherville; three brothers, James Loewenberg and his wife, Ellen, of Edina, Minnesota, Dennis Loewenberg of Estherville, and Arnold Loewenberg and his wife, Nancy, of Cypress, California; a sister-in-law, Mavis Loewenberg of Estherville; a brother-in-law, Maynard Sampson of Pea Ridge, Arkansas; and a sister-in-law, Kay Hill of Estherville. Preceding Melvin in death were his wife; a son, Brian, who died February 22, 1969; his parents; one brother, Ervin; and three sisters, Laverne Skow, Christina Jensen and Ardella Burgess.Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel - Estherville. Funeral services will be at First Presbyterian Church, Estherville, Iowa, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2007, with Pastor Mark Gabbard officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery, Estherville, Iowa, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2007, with military rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91.  (Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, SD, August 30,2007) Contributed by Mary Sicard (#47241773)
