Lorraine died Friday at the Marshall County Healthcare Center, Britton, at the age of 92. Louise Lorraine Liknes was born March 5, 1914, on the family homestead in Independence Township, Day County, near Langford, S.D., to David and Louisa (Aadland) Liknes. The youngest of 16 children, she grew up there and attended rural Day County schools. She was baptized and confirmed at Falnes Lutheran Church. On Oct. 5, 1933, she married Elmer Rudolph Likness. They lived on a farm near Langford until 1950, when they moved into Langford. Lorraine loved to cook and bake. After moving to town, she baby-sat and did baking for the Holland Cafe and Aspen Drug in Langford. She later worked as a cook for the Langford Public School, and retired in 1982 after 24 years of service. She helped at the Senior Center cooking for a few years, retiring in 1988. Her piano was a joy in her life. She was the church pianist at Falnes for many years, and also directed the church choir, men's choir and men's quartet. She was a faithful church member, and loved her circle members and attending the meetings. She was very devoted to daily Bible readings, up to the last months of her life. She enjoyed quilting with the church ladies, and helping with the annual lefse sales. Elmer died Feb. 15, 1997. Lorraine remained in Langford until moving to Spruce Court in Britton in May 2002, and became a resident of Wheatcrest Hills in January 2004. She is survived by one son, Elroy "Sarge" Likness, Andover, S.D.; one daughter, D. Mae Olla (Ken) Saeger, Milbank, S.D.; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, Carol Jean Likness, and 15 brothers and sisters.
