- Bio: Thelma Marie (Lee) Walker, 104 November 15, 1913 ~March 28, 2018Thelma Marie Walker was born November 15, 1913 in Story City, IA to Norwegian immigrants, Tarald and Olive Lee. Thelma attended grade school in Gilbert, IA. She went on to graduate from High School in Napier, IA and completed her teaching degree at Iowa State University. After college, Thelma was employed as a Home Economics teacher for schools in Neola, IA, Remsen, IA and Milford Township in Story County, IA.She married Leon W. Walker on May 4th, 1940 in Des Moines, IA. They were blessed with three children.The two remained married for over 62 years, until Leon passed away at the age of 95 on January 24, 2003.Along with her husband, Thelma ran the Walker Flower & Gift shop out of her home in Ames, IA for over 30 years where she became a treasure to all her patrons. Former students and customers frequently visited her over the many years following her retirement.Thelma Marie Walker died peacefully on March 28, at the age of 104.She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers Joseph Lee, Donald Lee and Leonard Lee, sister Helen Soderstrum, and 1 infant great-grandchild.Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Ruth Larson of Urbandale, IA; son Bill (Camilla) Walker of Boulder, CO; daughter Mary (Michael) Thompson of Austin, TX; son Dr. Thomas (Peggy) Walker of Lynchburg, VA; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.Her passion and enthusiasm for life and people was unwavering and will be forever remembered. The kind and loving spirit she demonstrated to all will leave a large void in the lives she touched.Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 pm Tuesday, April 3, at Adams Funeral home, 502 Douglas Avenue Ames, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, April 4, at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave., Ames, IA with burial to follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
