- Bio: OBITUARY: Bernece Sykora, June 6, 1921 ~ June 29, 2019 - reprinted from the LaCanne Family Funeral Home websiteBernece Arlene (Lee) Sykora was born June 6, 1921 in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, to George and Dena (Lee) Lee. She was raised on a family farm outside of Sanborn, Minnesota. Bernece had 6 brothers and 5 sisters. She attended country school for 4 years, and then attended and graduated from Sanborn Public Schools. Bernece went on to graduate from Mankato State Teachers College in 1942. While teaching country school near Storden, Minnesota, Bernece met Harley F. Sykora at the Baptist Church in Storden. They were married on April 2, 1944. After marriage, Harley and Bernece farmed for twenty years, first near Storden and then in the Windom area. This union was blessed with four children Keith, Bradley, Paul, and Mary Jo. Family was important and time was always set aside to visit brothers and sisters on both sides of the family. While living in the Windom area Bernece decided to return to teaching and returned to Mankato State College to complete her Bachelors degree. She taught fifth grade in Windom Public Schools in the Wilder and the Winfair elementary buildings. Bernece felt helping children learn was her calling, and enjoyed helping each group of students as they passed through her classroom. Bernece taught for 29 years and retired when she was 65 years old. After retirement, she enjoyed golf, reading, making quilts, studying the Bible and leading bible studies. In 1986 Bernece and Harley purchased a camper and started a new chapter in their lives - spring, summer, and fall in Minnesota, and winters in a warmer climate. They spent their last 17 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. In Arizona they established another family of friends for golf and other “Snowbird” activities. They started out as “youngsters” in their new Arizona church, and Bernece was soon leading a Bible study attended by many. Bernece and Harley moved their membership from Storden Baptist Church to First Baptist in Windom in 1958 when the family moved to a farm near Windom. The family participated and served at First Baptist throughout the years. Bernece is survived by four children and their spouses; Keith (Beth) Sykora of Waseca; Bradley (Sharon) Sykora of St. Peter; Paul (Ruth) Sykora of Hastings; Mary Jo (Don) Getting of Sanborn, IA; ten grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Davis of CO; two sister-in-laws, Shirley Lee of IL and Lucy Madson of MN; one brother-in-law Merle Sykora (Tom Olson) of MN and many nieces and nephews.
