- Bio: Shirlee Elaine Holmes, 86, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Urbandale Health Care Center. She battled Alzheimer's for the past five years. Shirlee was born on Oct. 18, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Frank and Dora Kutil. She married Gale Holmes on Sept. 10, 1949, and just celebrated 64 years of marriage.
- After high school, Shirlee attended Morningside College in Sioux City and later in life attended Des Moines Area Community College, where she earned a degree as a medical laboratory technician. She retired from Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines after working in the laboratory for many years.
- Shirlee and Gale were founding members of Covenant Christian Church in Urbandale and were active and leading members for much of their lives. Shirlee was a caring person who loved to give back to others and the community. Among her many volunteer activities, she taught English to Bosnian immigrants and volunteered for CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate -- to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young and active in their lives from president of PTA to Camp Fire Girls leader, and always welcomed their friends into her home. She loved being a part of her grandchildren's lives and being surrounded by family.
- She is survived by her husband, Gale Holmes; daughter, Jennifer (Joe) Gardner, West Des Moines; her son, Marty (Lois) Holmes, Sioux City; grandchildren Nick, Ben and Elizabeth Holmes, Sioux City; sister, Frances Johnson, Sioux City; and several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Dora Kutil, and sisters Doris Bourret and Jean Walburn.
- Shirlee donated her body to Des Moines University and will later be interred at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter.
- No services are planned. Donations in her memory may be directed to Unity Point at Home Hospice Care.
- Shirlee touched many lives and we will miss her dearly.
