A memorial service will be held on Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Inwood. Burial will be prior to the service. Reverend John Wolf will officiate. Viewing will be until 1 p.m., Sunday at Porter Funeral Home and continue with the family present from 4 - 6 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, all in Inwood. Melvin Fred Kruse was born January 14, 1921 to John Jr. and Margaret (Kappelmann) Kruse east of Inwood, Iowa. He attended country school. Melvin entered the U.S. Army and served as a 2nd Engineer Gunner during World War II from October 11, 1942 to September 3, 1945, flying many missions as a nose-gunner in a B-24 Bomber. Melvin was united in marriage to Muriel June Grotjohn on June 27, 1947 in Inwood. Together they farmed north of Inwood until retiring. Melvin served on the REC Board for many years. Melvin moved to Fellowship Village in May of 1996. Muriel died June 19, 1997. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and polka music. Melvin is survived by his brother, Don (Myrt) Kruse of Inwood; brother-in-laws: Chet Sorenson of Sioux Falls and Dale (Lila) Grotjohn of Rock Rapids and Little Rock, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Muriel; sisters: Viola Basquin and Elsie Johnson; brothers: Herman, Edwin and Walter Kruse. [Source: Porter Funeral home website
