- Bio: Rupert W. Koch, 85, of Viola, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove. He was born February 5, 1923 in Dayton Township, son of Carl J. Koch and Idelle (Garner) Koch. After graduation from Soldiers Grove High School, he joined the US Army Air Corps. A graduate of the US Army Air Academy, he flew and instructed others in the B-17 and the B-29. After World War II, he was stationed in Germany and then served several years in the Air National Guard. On February 18, 1950, he married Ernestine Molland of West Prairie. He farmed at Sylvan Township until his retirement in 1992. In addition to farming he served on the board of directors' of Dairyland Insurance, Sylvan Dairy, and he was the Sylvan Township Chairman for 23 years. He also served many terms as Five Points Lutheran Church Council President. Rupert loved life and his family. He always was there to help others, no matter what. Blessed be the memory of Rupert W. Rupert is survived by his wife of 58 years Ernestine, four children Michael (Patty) Koch of Poynette, John (Marsha) Koch of Columbus, Daniel (Rosemary) Koch of Viola and Mary (Richard) of Soldiers Grove, 9 Grandchildren and 7 great Grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends. Rupert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Carl Sherman, an infant son John Edwards, and a daughter Linda. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 12:00 PM at the Five Points Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Engel officiating. Burial was held at the Sylvan Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites provided by the Viola American Legion Post. Friends called at the Five Points Lutheran Church on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 PM. The Pratt Funeral Service of Richland Center assisted the family with their arrangements.
