The family accepts 29 March 1909 as his birth date.
    • Fridtjof Johansen Skjæveland is a son of Lars Johan Larsen Skjæveland (who was an entrepreneur, business owner and one of the founders of Jæderen Privat Bank) and Ane Elisabeth Svendsdatter Vatne. Fridtjof Johansen grew up in financial privilege until his father's early death in December 1923. Following his father's death, Fridtjof, his mother and four of his siblings, resided with his maternal aunt, Johanna Vatne Frøyland at Austrått Farm, Høyland, Rogaland from sometime after December 1923 to at least the summer of 1925. Fridtjof resided with his elder brother Sigurd on his farm, and working in his retail store while finishing school, from sometime in the summer of 1925 until March 1928. Fridtjof felt that his future was in America and departed Norway at port of Stavanger, Rogaland, on 08 March 1928 on the s/s Stavangerfjord, arriving port of New York, USA on 18 March 1928. He resided with his married sister, Elfrida Skjæveland Storhaug, and her family in New York and later moved to New York City and worked for McGraw Hill Publishing Co. On 09 November 1942, Fridtjov Johansen Skjæveland became a naturalised US citizen and changed his name to Fred Nansen Schaveland. Fred was career US military, serving in the US Army Air Forces in World War II (Pacific Theatre; 64th Bomb Squadron based on the Philippine Islands, and 24th Strategic Squadron, based on Tinian Island, North Field), and in the US Air Force as a cryptologist in the the 30th Communications Squadron, and later as a missileer (see definition below) in the USAF ICBM program. He served in the Korean Conflict in the early 1950s. Fred retired from the US Air Force on 01 July 1966. He then joined the US Civil Service continuing to serve at military installations in the USA until final retirement in 1971. Fred resided in Norway from September 1971 until August 1975, and made a short, final visit to Norway in May of 1982. Fred returned to the USA in August 1975 and resided at the US Soldiers' and Airman's Home, Washington, D.C. until his death in 1991. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, on 03 December 1991. In his younger days, Fred was a member of the International Organization of Good Templars, and the Sons of Norway-Polar Star. He was a gifted pianist and linguist, fluent in four languages (Norwegian, German, English and Danish). Fred loved to fish, play English lawn bowls and garden.
