A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015, at Maple Park Lutheran Brethren Church. Published in The Herald (Everett) on Dec. 27, 2015∼Henny Bakken was born on the island of Karmoy, in Norway, on April 5, 1928. She was the baby of the family with two older brothers and three sisters. Henny attended the local school and then worked in a butcher shop. She married Kristian Naley in 1952, and together they immigrated to Canada. Kristian and Henny found jobs and bought their first house in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Kristian found work with the Standard Oil Company and Henny worked in a local bakery. Their daughters Ingrid and Heidi were born in Canada. When Heidi was one year old, they were able to fulfill their dream of moving to the United States: they moved to Lynnwood, Washington in 1962 and bought their second house, where they would reside for 47 years. It was there that Kristian and Henny welcomed their third daughter, Cindy.Henny loved the Lord, her family, friends and her church. She had a quiet faith that was apparent in her acts of kindness and service to others, usually behind the scenes.Because Kristian worked on the sea, she spent much of her life as a single mom. Out of necessity, she taught her daughters that moms and girls can mow lawns, chop down trees and even go camping. They can go to school conferences and attend church alone. She was not one to share her private thoughts, but her girls knew that even if you were alone, church was not optional and she could often be heard humming hymns as she went about her day.In addition to raising three girls, sewing and gardening were her passion. She sewed for her daughters as they were growing up, which then expanded to sewing for her daughters’ friends. She kept count of the number of bridesmaid, church and school choir dresses she made over the years and the tally was well over 100. If she wasn’t sewing, her girls would come home from school to find her on her hands and knees, digging in the garden, with sweat pouring off her face and wearing a big smile – but she always stopped working when they came home, to listen…. and cook. She loved to cook for her family but cooking for three picky girls was probably not fulfilling; which may be why she was willing to attempt to make strange and exotic foods that her daughters learned about in school, like pizza, tacos and spaghetti (all served with potatoes). She was thrilled when her daughters married and she could cook for sons – finally someone she could stuff with food. When her daughters had houses of their own, she would show up, often when they were not home, and do laundry, weed the garden and leave a plate of waffles on the counter. She was affectionately known as “the white tornado.” She generously gave her time to babysit grandchildren and, when they were older, help transport them to their activities. As her children grew older, she turned to cooking and serving at church wedding and funeral receptions and also at the Nordic Heritage Museum.Henny enjoyed and relied on her extended family of Norwegian immigrants. However, as the kids grew up and extended families grew, “the gang” got together less and less. It was then that she organized the first reunion picnic at Lake Goodwin, which was the beginning of the Karmoy club.Henny went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 20, 2015. She is survived by her daughters Ingrid Hays (Michael), Heidi DuBose (Ben), and Cindy Haugen (Norman), sister Klara Skjerve, brother-in-law Anders Naley, and grandchildren Andrew Hays (Lindsey), Allison Hays, Benjamin DuBose (Sarah), Amelia DuBose, Daniel Haugen, Madeline Haugen, and Erik Haugen.[Beck's Funeral Home obituaries]
