- M. Eugene Hustel, 85, a long-time Claire City, SD area farmer, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at Tekakwitha Nursing Center in Sisseton, SD.
His funeral was held Saturday, January 8, 2005 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Veblen, SD, with Rev. Terrill Sorensen officiating. Burial was in the Veblen Cemetery, with Military Honors by the Eddie Robertson Post #76 of the American Legion of Veblen, and VFW Post #3342 of Sisseton.
Melvin Eugene Hustel was born December 10, 1919 in Norway Township of Roberts County, SD, to John and Selma (Langager) Hustel. As a youngster, he attended rural Roberts and Marshall County schools. After receiving his education, Gene helped on the family farm.
On April 9, 1943, Gene married Florence Lamoureaux in New Effington. They farmed the same farm on which Gene was born. In September of 1945, Gene was sent to Japan, where he served as a medic in the U. S. Army until December of 1946. Following his Honorable Discharge, Gene returned to the farm where he and Florence continued their farming operation until retiring in the early 1990's.
Gene was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Veblen and the Veblen Senior Citizens. He was a 56 year member of the Eddie Robertson Post #76 of the American Legion of Veblen, and a lifetime member of Sisseton V.F.W. Post #3342. Gene and Florence were foster parents to a number of children throughout the years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had a particular fondness for animals. During cold snaps, and especially on Christmas, all of the animals on Gene's farm received extra portions of food. He loved to go square-dancing. In later years, Gene and Florence enjoyed traveling on bus tours, and trips to California to visit Florence's family.
Gene is survived by his wife, Florence Hustel, and son John Hustel, both of Claire City; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Maurice Hustel; and a sister, Stella Rein.
Casketbearers were Sherman Hustel, Gregory Hustel, Jason Medhaug, Mike Borgen, Don Borgen and Carl Mayer.
The family requests memorials to be directed to the American Cancer Society.
