- Bio: Marie Petrine Hinderaker was born August 7, 1919 at Scandinavia Township, Deuel County, South Dakota. She married Grant William Hogie, who was born September 19,1911, the son of Edward J. and Thea (Gunderson) Hogie. He was also born in Scandinavia Township, Deuel Count, Astoria, S.D. They both attended school in Pioneer school, District #6, east of Astoria, S.D. Marie graduated from Astoria High School in 1937. Both Marie and Grant were members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Astoria, being baptized, confirmed and married there.In 1962 Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran Churches merged to become Bethel Lutheran where they were members until 1978. They both held offices in the Church. Besides Church activities and her many farming duties, Marie was the Deuel Darlings 4-H club leader, PTA officer, and through classes became a nurse's aide at the Hendricks, Minnesota hospital. Marie and Grant's first home was the Bennie Froiland farm, which Grant and his brother Arnold had been renting for a few years. In March of 1942, Marie and Grant moved to this farm: N.W. Section 18 Township 113 Range 47, and E 1/2 N.E. and N 1/2 S.E. Section 13, Township 113 Range 48 which they owned and operated until 1978. Until health forced Grant to retire he was engaged in diversified farming, discontinuing dairy cattle in 1966 but fed beef cattle and hogs until 1978. Grant enjoyed trading horses.Grant and Marie sold their farm in 1978 to Clarence and Barbara Milton and moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. This was a hard decision to make, but health problems took over. It was a sad day for them as they left the farm. In 1983, Marie and Grant joined their family by moving to Parker, Colorado. Grant passed away July 29th, 1986 in Englewood, Colorado. Marie continued living in Parker, keeping busy with Joy Lutheran Church activities and the Parker Senior Center especially ceramics class. Marie did beautiful embroidery work, winning prizes at the county fair. After she sold her home in Colorado, she lived with her daughters and at an assisted living facility in Mesa, AZ.
