- Bio: U.S. Forest Service marine biologist Jerry Wayne Hilbert, 40, of Fairbanks, died Aug. 8 at Providence Hospital.
- A funeral will be held Tuesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Atwater, Calif., with arrangements by Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced, Calif.
- Mr. Hilgert was born June 19, 1951, in Winona, Minn. He attended elementary school in Winona and graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif.
- He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Humboldt State University. He trained with the University of Montana Biological Station as a phycological researcher, the U.S. Geological Survey's National Training Center in aquatic biology interpretation and application and water-quality instrumentation, the U.S. Forest Service soils school at Berkeley and scanning electron microscopy training.
- He moved to Fairbanks in 1978 and worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a research aquatic biologist, a museum affiliate in micropaleontology and a hydrologic technician. Some of his most recent studies included the Copper River Delta wetlands, streams and mining areas around Fairbanks, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the water around Noatak and the effects of the Red Dog Mine road construction through the National Park Service. He had been hazardous materials safety officer and state trainer for Alaska.
- Mr. Hilbert was a member of the Phycological Society of America, International Phycological Society, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, North American Benthological Society and the California Academy of Sciences.
- He enjoyed all kinds of music, especially bluegrass, folk and jazz. He played with several musical groups and performed at many concerts, festivals and gatherings throughout the state. He especially enjoyed playing at the annual Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau. His other hobbies included camping, canoeing and gourmet cooking. He was active in soccer and had both played and coached. At the time of his death, he was a coach with the Fairbanks Youth Soccer League.
- Mr. Hilbert is survived by his wife, Ann McBeth of Fairbanks; his parents, Wilbert and Thelma, of Atwater; and his sister, Patricia Freitas of California.
