Olin Gilbert "Ole" Helgeson, 78, of Ely, formerly of Homestead, Iowa, died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a short illness. Ole was born on the family farm near Conroy, Iowa. He graduated from Conroy High School in 1940, where he was active in the school band, playing the trombone, and on the basketball and baseball teams.
- Ole Helgeson served in the Navy during Word War II overseas in the islands of Saipan, Guam, Tinian, and Marcus. He was an airplane mechanic and aerial gunner in a PV2 patrol plane and was ranked as Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class. Ole returned to the family farm and raised purebred Hereford cattle that he enjoyed showing in Kansas City and Chicago.
- On July 2, 1961, he married Jane Rice Mathews.
- Ole was a tile drainage contractor for 46 years. He was a charter member of the Land Improvement Contractors Association, a member and Past Commander of the VFW 8797, a member and Past Master of the Stellopolis Masonic Lodge in Williamsburg, Iowa, and a member of American Legion Post 76, Marengo, Iowa. He also was a member of the Last Man's Club of Iowa County, the Scottish Rite Consistory and El Kahir Shrine Temple in Cedar Rapids, where he played baritone bugle with the El Kahir Shrine Drum and Bugle Corp for 30 years. Ole was a member of the First Lutheran Church, near Conroy, and had served as predisent of the church council.
- Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cathy (Greg) Franzenburg, Keystone, Iowa; three grandchildren, Elysha, Geoff, and Tyler Franzenburg; step-daughter, Kathy Mathews, Ely; two sisters, Grace Olson, Marengo, Iowa and Betty (Jack) Patterson, Tucson, Arizona; and several neices and nephews.
- Ole was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Hjalmer, and sister, Norma Halvorson.
- Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2000, at the First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy, Iowa and conducted by the Rev. Wayne Pfannkuch. Soloist was Ron Halvorson. Organist was Jan Weatherford. Casketbearers were Donn Carnal, Marvin Halvorson, Jim Olson, Greg Franzenburg, Jack Patterson, and Art Stanerson. Honorary casketbearers were Franklin Reeves, John Nash, Walt Stanerson, Fred Koenig, Terry Baugh, Fred Faltinson, Henry Hertel, and James Martens. Military rites were performed by the VFW 8797, Williamsburg, Iowa.
