- Bio: Hjalmer Helgeson was born in Hilton township, Iowa County, Iowa at what is now the Steven Ahrens farm. His parents were Norwegian immigrants Ola Johan Helgeson and Talleta Tolsen. They met on the boat coming to America and were married in the spring of 1888. Their landlord, Alek Hans, later decided to move back onto their farm, so the family returned to their own farm in Kopervik, Norway when Hjalmer was two years old. The family included siblings Hilda (born 1890), Helma (born 1892), and Josie (born 1896). The home in Norway was on the island of Karmoe situated on a fjord. The family farmed the soil and raised sheep and cattle. Helma died in 1898 and six more children were born.
- In 1910 Hjalmer came to America with a cousin who knew English. The cousin stayed in Illinois, and Hjalmer, who couldn't speak any English, wanted to go on to Marengo, Iowa. He tried for a whole day (without food) to get onto trains, but the conductors would turn him back , not understanding him. Finally at 10 p.m. a Danish janitor understood him and helped him out. On May 17, 1910, Hjalmer arrived in Marengo, and with the help of John Englebert, mayor of Marengo, he got work on several farms. Later he rented the Gustav Olson farm as the the owner had recently died.
- On September 18, 1914 Hjalmer Olai Helgeson married Anna Malinda Olson, the younger of Gustav's two daughters, in Sycamore, Illinois. The couple made their home on the farm where he was living at the time of his death.

Again in 1974, he was able to return to his home in Norway with his daughter Norma Halvorson and her husband Milford. On April 29, 1975 he had his 81st birthday. He died the following Friday just before noon in his home from a heart attack. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
- A grandson, Ronald Halvorson sang two solos, "Behold the Host" and "Thine is the Glory", accompanied by Mrs. Roy Larson at the organ.
- Casket bearers were Dean Jacobs, Fred Faltinson, Everett Halvorson, Richard Ahrens, James Martens, and Arthur Stanerson.
