    • Bio: James Angell Hanson, 88, of Dodge Center and formerly of Elgin, passed away on July 6, 2019, of acute myeloid leukemia, at the home of his daughter Nancy in Dodge Center. He was born to Edward Peder Angell Hanson and Ester Nelson Hanson in Minneapolis, MN on August 15, 1930. He was married to Harriet Johnson of Newman Grove, NE on December 26, 1954, and they were married for 58 years, until her death in 2013.
    • Jim graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Augsburg College for three years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a pilot for five years, stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio TX, Bainbridge AFB in Bainbridge GA, Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo TX, Larson AFB in Moses Lake WA, and Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada. Upon his discharge, he finished his degree in math and physical education at Augsburg, then taught 7th-12th grade math in Elgin-Millville MN schools for 25 years. After retirement he worked for 10 years as a rural mail carrier in Wabasha-Kellogg and Plainview-Millville, 5 years at the I-90 Marion rest area, and attended as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s school, music and sporting events as possible. He was a beloved teacher, coach, referee, house painter and photographer in the community.
    • Jim was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday School and confirmation classes. He recently moved to Dodge Center where he attended Faith Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong lover of music, sang with the Robert Oudal Chorale and Plainview Community Choir, and performed in a number of Rochester musical productions. In recent years, he attended many events with his dear friend Kathleen McFarland; favorites were Berne Wood-Fired Pizza concerts, Thursdays on First, Texas Roadhouse (especially the nights Kiley was waitressing), American Legion and VFW dancing, and hamburger night at the American Legion in Plainview.
    • Jim is survived by his four children, Linda Hanson of Rochester, Karen Hanson Sande (Jonathan) of Duluth, Nancy Hanson Erdmann (Jerry) of Dodge Center, and Ed Hanson (Becky) of Savage; 13 grandchildren: Elliot (Amy), Madeline and Natalie Culp; Joshua, Kristin and Nathan Sande; Zachary (Ali), Logan, Justin, Katy and Colton Erdmann; and Tyler (Chelsey) and Eric Hanson. He is also survived by his brother John and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his wife, parents and three sisters.
    • Friends and family may visit on Saturday, July 20, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, in Dodge Center. There will also be a visitation on Friday, August 2, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin.
    • The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Terrill Bramstedt officiating, visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be on Wednesday, August 7, at 11:45 a.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
    • The family wishes to thank the many caregivers at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Kasson, and Seasons Hospice.
    • In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, Seasons Hospice, or Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.
